Question

WebFusion - don't support Dreamweaver Extensions!

Hi,

Just to let you know, to save you the trouble we've had, that WebFusion DO
NOT support Dreamwevaer Extensions on their Shared Windows hosting.
They have disabled "Enable Parent Paths" in IIS which means that any
extensions that creates include file references to files in the parent path
won't work (InterAkt, WebAssist etc).

Really disappointing service as well, but that's neither here nor there
considering the site doesn't work on their systems anyway!
Oh well...back to the drawing board! :o(

If anyone can recommend a good UK host that does allow "Enable Parent Paths"
on their Windows Server, I'd be interested to know about them.
PS. Yes, I know Fasthosts allow it, but they do not allow ANY site that has
adult content, even if it is a legal adult retail business! Talk about old
fashioned!

We need a host that will host an adult online retail web site (complying
with UK pornography law), with enable parent paths enabled on a Shared
Windows server! lol!

Cheers
Nath.

Hi Pat,

Enough there to confirm my initial fears.
I had experienced problems with HostEurope (before they became WebFusion)
when they decided to delete the functionality of contact form
scripts...without telling anyone!

Since then I've used Fasthosts, despite them being almost double in price
per year, but had to move this adult content site due to Fasthosts old
fashioned terms & conditions. Within 5 days of the move I was back in touch
with Fasthosts asking them to reconsider the adult site!! No-one picking
up the phone in sales, 25 minutes+ wait on tech support line with just a
ring (no indication of time left, queue position etc), e-mails not replied
to...and EXACTLY what you said about the attitude there. Cocky,
couldnt-give-a-monkeys, couldnt-care-less attitude towards customer
problems.

If Fasthosts dropped their prices, even just slightly, I think they'd pick
up a lot of new clients from WebFusion purely for customer support reasons.

Anyway, Interakt solved my problem. along with some changes to the include
reference thanks to other posts.

Thanks for the help provided.
Regards
Nath.

I have "Links relative to Site Root" at the moment:
My Include is still like this though:
<!--#include file="../Connections/connNAME.asp" -->

So I've manually changed this to (not a colon):
<!--#include virtual="/Connections/connNAME.asp" -->

And it seems to have done the trick. However Interakt have been back in
touch to say that the latest version of File Upload, which is the extension
I'm using on the site, should work with Enable Parent Paths disabled so I'm
off to try that out...

It has sorted it! Should my previous host, Fasthosts, have "Enable Parent
Paths" disabled? Is there a security risk? WebFusion seem to think so.

Regards
Nath.

Just use absolute paths instead. Interakt extensions do work with abolute paths, you don't have to use the "../" method. You set this up in your site definitions. Just make your links relative to the site root. Then instead of include file:"../whatever" it will be include virtual:"/whatever".

I agree, I have a VPS server with web fusion for a client. Setup took 2
days, and when they handed it over, it didn't work. They had to do further
work before they handed it back.

However, once it was done its fine, and you can manage it yourself.

I have a WebFusion VPS Pro package and I am very pleased with it. It is like
having a dedicated server without the full cost. For what you get it is very
well priced and performance is good. You are not limited to a tiny SQL
database size, you get loads of bandwidth, full SQL Server sevices including
Enterprise Manager, you can install whatever you want........the virtual
server is completely yours to do what you want with.

One word of caution is about WebFusion themselves. Barr one or two, there
tech-support are arrogant, rude, unhelpfull, any really not very good at
there job. I had a major issue with them when I first took the VPS. I
requested and then cancelled a re-install of the VPS, due to initial
problems with the server which I resolved. The tech-support guy confirmed
that the re-install had been cancelled and would not go ahead. 3 days later,
after configuring the whole site and my customer telling they're customers
that the site was live, WebFusion re-formated the server!!

Ok I thought, There are backups of the server, I will re-install from there.
NO. All backups are deleted in the format!!!!!! There were then problems
because the new VPS was not installed correctly, so it had to be wiped
again. Eventually, 8 days later, I got the site up and running again. Not
once did I get an apology from WebFusion, in fact nearly everyone I spoke to
there while this was happening couldn't have cared less about the situation.
The situation they had put me in.

Since the VPS has been back online though, I have been very pleased. It
performs very well and you can do virtually anything you want with it. It is
very good value for money. I just wish some companies that have much better
customer service would offer VPS. I would ditch WebFusion in a second for
the way I was treated. But, as long as the VPS keeps chugging away and I
don't have to deal with WebFusion tech-support I am very happy. Well worth
the money. Just make sure you understand they're Service Level Agreement for
VPS as you don't get what you get on a shared hosting package.

Have you looked at getting a VPS?

Its like having your own dedicated server, in that you have full control
over it, but in reality its a division of a web server, ie there are a
number of VPS's on one physical server. As a result its a lot cheaper than
your own true dedicated server.

Webfusion do these from £35.99 for a windows one, and there are other hosts
offering them as well.

Advantage of it is you can set it up exactly how you want, and install your
own software if required. If you need special configurations then its ideal.
