Thanks for the link! I downloaded the test project, worked through all the steps, and ran the script to compile the time data. Here's what I've got: 41, 74, 25, 289 Let me know what you think! I'm encouraged to see that my GPU was used correctly for the appropriate test renders; I was watching its performance during the render and usage jumped up significantly, even pushing 100% at times. In that case, perhaps the projects I'm working on just aren't a GPU-centric as I though they would be.

Thanks for your reply, Ann Bens! My apologies for leaving out the media information—my media files are stored on the Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drive. I have had project files stored on both the boot drive (the 860) and the media/cache drive (the 960); I have not yet noticed any differences, though I've only recently tried storing project files on the 960.

Hello! I am currently working on several complex projects in Premiere Pro and After Effects, and I'm concerned that I'm not getting the performance I should be getting out of my computer. Specifically, I don't think Premiere Pro is using the GPU the way it's supposed to. I've already covered the basics of troubleshooting—Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Media Encoder are all set to use the CUDA version of the Mercury Playback Engine, and GPUSniffer correctly identifies my GPU. Now I'm ready to embark on more serious testing. For starters, here's my system build: Intel i7 8700K Processor (running at stock speeds) MSI Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB GPU 32GB RAM 250GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD (Windows 10, Adobe apps, Adobe project files) 500GB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD (Project files, media cache) My projects vary in length and complexity, but one I've been working on is an 11-minute video with multi-cam editing of three angles, two shot in 1080x1920 and the other shot in 2.7K. All three angles have Lumetri Color and Unsharp Mask applied; the third-party plugin Neat Video (for noise reduction) is applied to some of the clips. All cameras are being downscaled to 720x1280 during editing and are rendered at that resolution. Codecs vary; some of the footage is C-Log Pro-Res, while the 2.7K is from a GoPro, so I'm assuming that is H264 (and it's certainly the toughest for my computer to handle with effects applied). The Neat Video plugin utilizes the GPU, and if I'm understanding correctly, the downscaling and Lumetri Color should be utilizing it as well. However, export times are surprisingly slow; granted, it's an elaborate project, but watching how the resources are spread, my CPU is doing the vast majority of the work (which it should, I understand that), but the GPU seems to be doing essentially nothing, floating around the 1%-3% utilization range throughout the export, which takes a bit more than three hours. I'm suspicious that something must be up because one of my coworkers is able to get similar (or faster) rendering times on an older Macintosh running a four-core, 2.7GHZ i7 and an AMD Radeon GPU. So basically, I'm ready to give my computer a thorough testing to see where the issue might lie, and I'm looking for any advice/help on how to proceed. I believe a user here (Bill Gehrke?) has a test project for Premiere Pro that could help pinpoint if my system is being bottlenecked somewhere. I'd also like to test the speeds of my SSDs to make sure they're performing as they're supposed to. If you need any additional information, please let me know, and I'll provide it to the best of my ability. I'm hoping to work through this relatively quickly since these projects need to keep moving through the pipeline, and if I'm having issues, it will be a big help to have them resolved as soon as I can. To clarify a bit, I'm wondering where the point of diminishing returns lies with these motherboards. The Strix model has a heat sink for one of the M.2 drives, which is a nice feature since those drives have a reputation for running hot, but do you think it's necessary? I'm planning to run a Samsung 960 EVO 500gb. Also, sound -- I've been told that having a separate sound card is no longer necessary because onboard sound has improved considerably over the years, though I'm wondering if anyone has insight regarding the basic onboard Realtek sound on the TUF motherboard compared to the enhanced sound setup on the Strix motherboard.

Hello! I working on finalizing a custom computer build for using Adobe software, primarily Premiere Pro and After Effects. I'm hoping to get some advice on an ideal choice for a motherboard. I will be running an i7 8700K processor and have a few options for motherboards, but I've more or less narrowed it down to the ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming motherboard and the ASUS TUF Z370-PRO Gaming motherboard. I'm drawn to the Strix board since it has built in Wi-Fi, superior audio quality, and perhaps a nicer build quality overall, but I'm also trying not to overspend and suspect that either motherboard would perform just fine for my needs. Does anyone here have experience with these motherboards, or general thoughts on a good motherboard choice for an i7 8700K build? Thanks!

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can provide thoughts on using Adobe Illustrator CC and Photoshop CC with a Microsoft Surface Book. Specifically, I'm curious about the Surface Book with a 256GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, a 2.4GHz Intel i5 processor, and NVIDIA graphics. I know it's an older model, but does anyone have experiencing using the Surface Book for graphics work with Illustrator and Photoshop, and if so, is performance acceptable? Thanks!

I'm happy to help! I also got to thinking that what would really breathe new life into an older computer like yours is a solid state hard drive. They're so much fastest than the hard disk drives that were the standard for so many years (and are still very common), and they can make a huge difference in the responsiveness of a computer -- you'd probably have much fastest startup times for the Adobe software, in addition to the computer itself starting faster and being able to open large files quicker. Unfortunately, solid state drives aren't very cheap, but if you could get away with 500GBs (maybe saving your 750GB drive for files that you don't use as often), the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB is $140 on Amazon. Installing hard drives isn't very hard -- you'd need a little adapter since solid state drives are smaller than hard disk drives and your computer case probably doesn't have an empty space of the right size, but beyond that it would just be a matter of screwing the solid state drive (in its adapter) into one of the empty bays of your case and plugging in two cords, one to the power supply and one to the motherboard. Then you can use software to clone all of the data on your current hard drive to the new one.

Hi Shelly! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. Which CS6 software will you be planning to use? I know of someone running a Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, and InDesign CC on a similar computer with a Q8400 processor, which runs only slightly faster (2.66 GHZ) than the 2.40 GHZ of your Q6600. With 8GB of RAM, the system is able to run Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign CC with acceptable results -- it's not lightning fast, and you can't do anything else while the Adobe software is running, but the performance of the software is fine and productive. I would think that adding a few extra gigabytes of RAM could make a big difference -- a while back, I took my laptop (which I use primarily for internet browsing) from 4GB to 8GB, and it has made a huge difference. I also know of a computer that was running Adobe CC software just fine under 8GB of RAM, but when the RAM was doubled to 16GB, its performance improved significantly. Going from 5GB of ram to, say, 8GB certainly couldn't hurt. Of course, since your computer is old, you would want to be careful to purchase the right type of RAM. I'm just guessing, but your computer is probably running DDR2 RAM, which I don't think is very expensive these days. Looking quickly on Amazon, it looks like you could get 8GB (in the form of four 2GB chips) for around $30.00. Hopefully this is somewhat helpful -- perhaps someone else can jump in with more thoughts on whether a RAM upgrade would be a good idea, and if so, what type of RAM or combination of chips you might want to look for.

As for the length of my renders, most of them (especially in Premiere Pro) would be on the short side, though I suppose some more complicated After Effects projects could take longer. What would you consider a long, hard render?

In regard to the motherboard I listed above (ASUS TUF Z370-PLUS GAMING Desktop Motherboard), it has six SATA ports, with the following notes: "When a device in SATA mode is installed on the M.2_1 socket, SATA_1 port cannot be used. When a device is installed on the M.2_2 socket, SATA_5/6 ports cannot be used." So, hypothetically speaking, if I installed two M.2 drives, I would have three SATA ports left over to use? One for the regular SSD, one for the Blu-Ray drive, and one left over. That would be fine with me.

So if I'm understanding correctly, I shouldn't have any issues with running a GPU and a single M.2 drive, and I could even go to a pair of M.2 drives without issue so long as I forego a sound card or similar PCIe cards. Bill, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the GPUs! I had gathered from reading your past posts that the GTX 1060 represented excellent value for performance, and I think that will be a good choice for my purposes. As for motherboards, I'm open to other options if anyone has thoughts or preferences. Since I'm not interested in overclocking and, at least in the foreseeable future, would not be running more than 64GB of RAM, that particular model seemed like a reasonable choice without going overboard on features I'll never use. Then again, if a different board offered a greater number of lanes for PCIe devices, I would certainly look into that.

I've gone over some of the Puget Systems articles and have been impressed by the 8700K's general performance in After Effects, where it seems to lead the way, and it also seems to be at or near the top for the types of media I'd be working with in Premiere Pro. So if it offers 16 PCIe lanes, I expect all of these would be utilized by the graphics card -- how many would that leave for drives/other PCIe cards? Are there extra lanes available through the chipset? This is an area that I can never seem to figure out. At the moment, I would be planning to run a SATA SSD drive, an M.2 drive, a sound card in one of the PCIe 1x slots, and a SATA Blu-Ray drive. Would all of these work together, and how many options (if any) would it leave for future expansion? Thanks!

Hello! I am putting together the specifications of a new computer for running Adobe software, primarily Premiere Pro and After Effects. I'm trying to put together a well-balanced, stable machine for editing 1080HD H264 videos, while having the option to work with 4K in limited amounts if needed down the road. Basically, I'm looking for something solid that will be able to edit multi-layered 1080 projects with some effects added without dropping frames, but I don't want to go overboard on a machine that offers way more power than I intend to use. Does this build look like a nice balance? Let me know what you think! Unless you would be using a lot of Cinema 4D with After Effects, which it doesn't sound like you would, from what I've read the i7 8700k is an excellent processor for high performance in After Affects, outperforming more expensive processors with more cores but lower clock speeds.

Thanks, Bill! So I would want at least 20 lanes if not more. I've read that the quality of motherboard sound has risen in recent years, so perhaps sound cards aren't really necessary now. However, I did install a modest sound card in a video editing computer several years ago (the motherboard was circa 2008), and the improvement in sound quality was impressive.

On a different note, does anyone have guidelines for an ideal number of PCIe lanes offered by a processor? Every time I think I have a proper understanding of PCIe lanes, I read something else that confuses me. I'm looking to run a single graphics card (probably a GTX 1060 with 6GB of memory), and possibly/probably a Samsung M.2 drive and a sound card. How many PCIe lanes would I need for this? Also, am I correct that some motherboards have chipsets that essentially give you extra PCIe lanes? Thanks!

After reading that one, I found a similar article discussing how the different processors perform in After Effects and was impressed by the performance of the i7 7700K and 7740K. I see that these processors only support 64GB of RAM, but then that is also the case with the Ryzen 7s. It appears that the 7700K and the 7740K fall short of the Ryzens and other processors when it comes to rendering previews and exporting files, though in my case I'm looking for solid performance with playback during editing and am less concerned with export times. Would you recommend a 7700K or a 7740K for someone planning to use Premiere Pro and After Affects primarily with 1080 HD?

Hello! I'm looking for some advice and thoughts on how Adobe Premiere Pro and After Affects perform with recent AMD processors compared to Intel processors. It was my understanding that in the past, Intel was the way to go -- AMD processors apparently lacked certain instruction sets that were useful in Premiere and After Affects? However, in reading some recent threads on this hardware forum, I've gotten the impression that the AMD Ryzen processors -- while perhaps not quite as good as the best Intel processors -- are significantly better than previous generation AMD processors. Generally speaking, can the most recent AMD processors now be used with solid results in Premiere and After Affects? Or is Intel still the way to go? If you have any general guidelines (or thoughts about the latest round of AMD and Intel processors that are in the process of being announced), I would appreciate it! Thanks!
