To clarify, I had to convert the Postscript fonts to OpenType. The default in TransType is TrueType fonts and I thought it had worked yesterday because I could convert the PSD fonts to editable inside AE. But today I realized that the fonts were still not showing up in the font menu list in AE despite showing up in Photoshop and Illustrator. My solution was to use a free demo of TransType 4 for Mac or Windows to convert the Postscript fonts. It's not clear from their website what the limitations are for the demo. The full version is $97 USD. There's a lot of free "online font converters", but the sites look very sketchy. ... View more

Not sure if this applies to your situation. But we were having alpha issues where the footage was displaying the footage with an alpha, but the alpha channel looked nothing like the original in After Effects. So I might have found a "better" temporary fix. (I'm on AE 13.7 along with El Capitan and had been using the tilde key to maximize the preview window.) THE (workaround) FIX: Open the Render Queue and drag it below the timeline. Haven't done much experimenting, but having the Render Queue below the timeline allows me to preview in real-time again. Same boat here. Funny it's happening cross-platform. With MP turned on, I've allocated all CPUs and then only 2 and every time I see "Initializing Background Processes" in the Info Panel for several minutes with no apparent progress. Now, if I cancel it, AE crashes. However no render problem at all if I turn off MP. Tried it with two different video cards and same result.
