Hello, Hope you're all well. Regarding dodge and burning is there any difference between using the dodge and burn tools in comparison to using the Brush tool with black and white when on a gray layer (mode:soft light) I.e. Will the outcome be any different either technically or visibly?

Hello Per. Thank you for your answer. This seems the most efficient way to navigate myself around an image. However I seem to be having issues. I am using a Mac and my preferences are set so I have to use "fn+up" (or down etc) when moving through an image, instead of the CMD+up/down shortcut you mentioned. To add, when I hit fn+right/left my view jumps to the top-right, bottom-right, top-left or bottom left of the image. Instead of moving one screen to the right/left, like it does when I hit fn+up/down. My question: Is this a problem with my Photoshop shortcuts, Mac shortcuts, or both?

Hello all, Hope you're all well. As you all know when working on files, we clean each image of all imperfections i.e. dust, scratches, hairs etc. Moreover, I find when I am checking back through my cleanup layer there are patches of debris I have missed out. I am trying to find out an efficient sensible way of methodically navigating myself around an image in order to make sure I do not miss these patches of debris. This will save me a lot of time. This is Photoshop so I understand there is never a "right" way to do anything. Everyone has there own tricks and techniques. I am very interested in any contribution. Hello all, Just here wondering if frequency separation is used as a substitute for dodge and burning skin. Or are they instead, two techniques which are generally used collectively on a single image? Hello Melissa. I generally send JPGs when a client has asked for a quick look at an image so they can get an idea of how things are progressing. I will normally send TIFFs as final delivered files unless the client has asked for something else.

Hello all, Was just wondering if you could give me any advice on file formats when importing or exporting in Photoshop/when receiving or sending off anything required for photoshop. I have done a lot of my own research on the topic but still get confused with JPEGS, DNGS, RAWS, TIFFS etc. I am still a beginner and the last thing I want to do is send a file in the incorrect format to a client. But surely instead of making a chroma green layer behind my layer mask layer, I could just hit the backslash key to visualise my mask instead (making sure the colour of my visual mask is set to a contrasting colour to). Or am I missing the point here?

Hey all, I have been using Photoshop for several months now and have of course come by masks. I mainly edit portraiture and fashion imagery. I am very eager to quiz you all on anything I may need to add to my selecting and masking arsenal e.g. quicker work arounds or longer yet more in depth techniques. Here is my routine for selecting and masking something: 1. I draw around or select the subject with whatever selecting tool I choose (normally pen tool). 2. I right-click and select "make selection". Then when the marching ants are visible I create a curves layer, which creates a layer mask. 3. Thirdly, I'll use the "select and mask" tool to develop my mask further, primarily for the hair, overall reaching more intricate parts of the image. 4. I will then (alt-click) go into my layer mask and clean up any imperfections e.g. clean up any unwanted black paint inside the white silhouette. 5. The next step would be to blur the mask and be rid of overly sharp edges. 6. Following that, I would click out of the layer mask and select the backslash key, to visualise my mask. 7. Able to visualise my mask I can now use the blend modes Multiply and Screen to help pinpoint parts of my mask, which don't completely fit the subject. Once I have pinpointed the faults I will either brush in the corrections or use the dodge and burn tools to push in or push out the mask. This is my method. Feel free to critique it and comment sensibly below. I value all your comments so please do post. I would love to develop my select and masking skills further and your minds are full of ideas. I currently have a blank layer open, filled with the colour white. I've been painting strokes of black onto the layer, firstly with 'enable airbrush-style build-up effects' on. Then with it off. I have my brush on 100% opacity and 10% flow when 'enable airbrush-style build-up effects' is both on and off. I am unable to see the difference between the different strokes of brush, after having brushed several times (10 each) with the effect on and off. I have an idea of what the effect is suppose to do, however as I am not seeing any change my mind isn't fully understanding. Also: Yes I already restarted Photoshop to make sure the program wasn't glitching. Lastly, thank you in advance for any comments and posts, which are helpful and informative.

Hello all. This is a sample of an image I am working on. It consists of paint. I was just wondering the best way to get rid of the edge seen in the middle of the image. If you're struggling to see, just focus on where the large swoosh of colour consisting of pink, red and yellow suddenly gets brighter. I was thinking of creating a soft mask and using a curves layer to add more shadow, however I'm sure there are other ways? Let me know your thoughts. Thank you in advance.

Hey all. Here is a screenshot of an image I'm currently retouching. I've been asked to remove the oil, which is being poured into the flowing paint from the right side of the image. I've already tried to stamp and clone my way out of this one but I'm finding that can only take me so far. Clearly the oil is transparent so was wondering if there's any sort of adjustment techniques I could use? I am in a bit of a pickle so any advice and further help will be much appreciated. I'm currently editing a still life image, which consists of mixed paint on a flat surface. Oil is being poured inside amongst the colours to the right of the image. I have been asked to remove the oil. This is where I am stuck. How do I remove the oil completely from the image and make it blend in? I am finding it to be difficult as the (obviously) oil is see-through, so I am damaging parts of the image behind. I have used the patch tool and the clone stamp tool but I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. I'm a little stuck so any feed back would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.
