Decision time. We have an application that has been running
since 2001 with no changes. We have two 1U rack servers both
running Win 2000. One is exclusively for the database, MSSQL 2000,
and the other is running Coldfusion 5 on IS6. Both boxes are 2 gig
ram with P4 at 2.66. We tried to upgrade to CF 6 a while back when
it first came out but we had lots of problems with 100% CPU then
crash so we went back to CF 5. This particular application receives
heavy usage with over 200 simultaneous users and heavy database
access. Also, it is mission critical on certain days, (long
story...)
I am very concerned about the age of the hardware. We have
several of those mission critical days next month and I need to
decide what to do. I'm considering upgrading to CF 8 and switching
to Linux/Mysql but that is a lot of work to convert and test
everything, or maybe I should just upgrade to 2 new Windows boxes
and upgrade to Win 2003 and MSSQL 2003 and CF 8. Cost is really not
as much of a concern as the risk of breaking something during
reconfiguring, testing and hardening the application.
What to do? What would you do?
