I have been able to use this feature as recently as 02/11. We did three Windows 10 updates last week. KB4487038 02/13 KB4487017 02/13 KB4023057 02/15 I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Anyone else having this problem? Thanks.

No, the arrow keys didn't work. Nothing on the keyboard worked, but only in a document.

Checking through the preferences, I found that "Lock file on Network" was checked. I unchecked it, and the keyboard now works. I don't understand all I know about that. I am not accessing the file on the network, but, the problem is solved.

Recently my keyboard stopped working in FrameMaker only. The mouse works fine, and if I put the cursor in a window such as a marker window, the keyboard will work. If I open a document to edit, the keyboard doesn't work. I tried rebooting, reloading the program, nothing brings the keyboard back. It works ok in other programs and in Windows. The KEYBOARD WORKS OK, except to edit a document in FrameMaker.

Well, you see, that's the problem. There is nowhere that PDFX4 is selected. I would change it if I could find anywhere it is specified. As I said, I believe that the file is read as a normal course of setup with all other setup files. I don't know for sure if that is true, but I suspect it is. Now, I am going to get another copy of the file to replace the one I have to see if that makes a difference. One of the other operators is able to compile successfully, so that is where I will get the file. Dennis

PDFX4 2008.joboptions I am unable to find anywhere that file is specified. I suspect it is being generally read as a setup function with all the setup files, and causes a read error which hangs the system. I looked at the file and could not see any potential error. Perhaps if I could get another copy of the file, I could try to substitute it and see if it reads properly. Of course, that may not be the problem at all, but that is the only thing showing as an error. Thank you for your help.

Thank you. I'll try to find where that is occurring, but it isn't obvious right now. Dennis >

"Can you produce a PDF using Standard or High Quality job options?" No. My default is Standard, and I usually use Standard or Smallest File Size.

I don't know of any choice which would specify that. I either use Smallest File setting, or Standard. I rarely use High Quality. There is no setting I am aware of that specifies that compliance.

Here are the latest observations: It seems that files without images compile without error. Files with images bomb out about the 2nd or 3rd page, (when encountering the first image, I suppose). However, I finally got Distiller up long enough to capture an error message, which follows. This was a file with images. I checked the images, and they were not overly large, mostly PDF or jpgs, with an occasional png. Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101 CID support library initialization completed. Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2008.joboptions: /CheckCompliance out of range

Yes. Gets to page 37 and hangs in the spooler. Does not generate a TPS file. I think I will start processing small sections and see if I can find a suspect file using File>Print. Was not successful with Save as PDF, maybe this will make a difference.

Updated to 14.0.3.500. I'm getting the same behavior, i.e., Framemaker starts to compile, creates the TPS file, and the spooler gets to about page 37 or 38, then hangs. Never gets to the Distiller. Interestingly, the spooler file size changes after I cancel the file in the spooler. I tried removing some documents, and it still hangs about the same place. It will , (or randomly, will not), compile an individual document from the book. I've gone through the tips and tricks, and no change. Windows 10 PRO, v 1709, Build 16299.192

I'm running 14 0.2.425. I suspect that is the problem. We've recently had a protocol change, since we're a DOD contractor, so I have to have IT do my updates. Bummer. I'll let you know. Thanks.

I am unable to Save Book as PDF in FM 2017. I have noticed that now I am also unable to save certain documents of the book as PDF, but when I take those out, I still wind up with a non-responsive FM 2017. Windows 10. Adobe PDF as default printer.

Thank you for the reply, Arnis. I don't find that option in my Find/Replace dialog. I've tried copying the superscripted text to the clipboard and pasting in the Replace box of the Find and Replace dialog, but it loses the superscripting, and pastes into the document without it. I find I have to go into each occurrence individually and superscript each one. I'm using Illustrator CS5....and I just realized I'm on the wrong forum. Never mind.........

Thank you for the reply. It's a very clumsy implementation, however. Might I suggest that a simple notification that you risk saving in a later version, giving you the option to do so, and then continue with the update? As it is, you proceed with the update, then get a status message with multiple errors that the files can't be saved, and not a clue as to how to proceed to accomplish what you set out to do. Like this: "Hey, comrade, I see you want to update this book. If you do, you will save all the documents in your new version. Is that ok? Otherwise, you will need to save them under a new file name. Proceed, or save under a new file name?" Instead of: "Ok, update. Wait a minute, I can't save that file, .....I can't save that file....I can't save that file....can't save that one either..... can't save that one....bomb out....goodbye..." Beautiful.

When I try to update a book created in FM9, I get multiple error messages that the file can't be opened because it was created in a previous version. What's up with that?

The file was a WMF, (Windows Meta File), which I assume is a tif. The error message appeared after I selected the graphic I wanted to replace, and selected File>Import>File. The error message popped up as I clicked the last File, before any dialog boxes appeared at all. I finally just deleted the image that was there, and imported another image. I don't know why I got the error message, but I'm through screwin' with it. Thanks for your help.

Version 7.1 p114, Windows XP Pro. I did not remove the original image. I intended to replace it, as I had done in previous instances to other images. The image is in an anchored frame. I am able to create a new anchored frame, and insert an image into it. Incidently, the error message appears immediately upon selecting the second File in File>Import>File.

Using FM 7.1, when I try to replace an image with another image using File>Import>File, I get an error message, "cannon specify a dpi setting for the selected graphic." I get the message when selecting File>Import>File before I ever get to the file choosing dialog. Any idea where this is coming from and how to correct it? Thanks. Dennis

Actually, my name is Dennis. There was no way I could get a screen name even closely approximating my real name, so I finally gave up. I apologize for my idiotic screen name. Thank you for the information. I was sure there was a simple and easy way to do it. Dennis

I'm a newbie at FrameMaker, and I figure there is probably an easy way to do this. I have two books with an identical chapter in each. The chapter, paragraph, page numbers, formatting and content are identical. The only difference would be the book name and other item specific data which could be corrected with master page updates. Can I copy an entire document from one book to another, and have it take on all the variables of the new book?

Wow! Art, your reply led me to fix a problem with the first page of a document that was really bugging me. I examined the Autonumber tag for the chapter number for the first page in chapter 3 which persisted in keeping the page number 2-1. There was an n2 in there, and when I changed it to n3, it correctly numbered the page as 3-1. I'm new at FrameMaker, and inherited a document set up by someone else. The variable definitions all appeared to be the same, so I was about to throw up my hands when I read your reply. Thanks. Dennis (I apologize for my idiotic screen name. I was apparently unable to put anything in there resembling my real name which the system would accept. I even tried putting my real name in there, but it apparently didn't like that either. I'd almost rather not post than use such an idiotic screen name.)
