Illustrator Creative Challenge #6: Make Double-Exposure Lettering with Clipping Masks

Welcome back to the Illustrator Creative Challenges, our monthly nudge to open Illustrator, learn something, and share it with the community. This time, we're zooming right in on a single, brilliant feature, the Clipping Mask, and using it to hide a whole world inside a single word.

THE CHALLENGE: FILL A WORD WITH A WORLD

Pick a word, then fill its letters with a photo instead of a flat color, so the image only shows through where the letters are. It's the classic double-exposure lettering look: type as the frame, a whole scene living inside it.

WHAT TO INCLUDE

  • The word is set big and bold. More letter area means more of the photo shows through.
  • One photo positioned so something recognizable lands inside the letterforms, an eye, a horizon, a landmark, not just a random patch of color.
  • A close crop. Zoom and reposition until the interesting part of the photo is actually where the letters are.

The telltale sign you've nailed it: someone should recognize the photo and read the word at the same glance.

HERE'S MINE

I made GOA, filled with a beach photo from Goa. Here's the workflow:

  1. Set the word big and bold in Macchia with the Type tool.
  2. File > Place my photo, then rough-scaled it over the letters so the horizon would land somewhere inside them.
  3. Selected the outlined type and the photo together, made sure the type sat on top in the stacking order, then Object > Clipping Mask > Make (Ctrl/Cmd+7).
  4. Used Object > Clipping Mask > Edit Contents to nudge the photo around inside the letters until I had the setting sun in the middle.

YOUR ONE TOOL FOR THIS CHALLENGE: THE CLIPPING MASK

  • Make it - select your type and your photo, type on top, then Object > Clipping Mask > Make (or Ctrl/Cmd+7). Only vector objects can create clipping masks, but you can mask any type of artwork.
  • Reposition what's inside - Object > Clipping Mask > Edit Contents lets you select and move the photo around inside the letters without breaking the mask, so you can hunt for the perfect crop after the fact.
  • Undo it - Object > Clipping Mask > Release, if you want to start the crop over from scratch.

The only supporting act: turn your type into a real vector shape first with Type > Create Outlines and bring your photo in with File > Place. Skip the outlining step, and the mask won't work.

HOW TO TAKE PART

Reply to this thread with:

  • Your finished piece, the word and the photo living inside it.
  • A line on your process, the word you chose and why, and which part of the photo you positioned inside the letters. Honestly, this is the best part to read, so don't skip it.

I had taken some vertical images of windmills, which required vertical text. A legible, bold font with movement was chosen to compliment a flowing wind.

Do I feel a breeze? The flowing text makes it come alive.

This is a photo of wild roses (taken this summer) that I centered on the area with the highest concentration of roses. I just added a shadow and an outline.

Bit of a play on words… like the concept and the unintended pun.

Hi Anubhav, this is a great challenge, so I built something a little more complex with an eye toward the near future (March 19th next year ;-)

And since the topic came up:

My personal wish after 40 years of having Illustrator would be a complete overhaul of the clipping mask feature—it’s really awful for users to work with!
