Lightroom Classic v15.5 is Here: Better Masking Controls, Render to DNG, and More

The August 2026 release of Lightroom Classic (v15.5) brings a mix of creative enhancements, workflow improvements, and reliability fixes designed to help you edit with greater precision and confidence. From more refined masking controls to a new way to create rendered DNG files, this update focuses on giving photographers more flexibility while also addressing a wide range of issues reported by the community.

What’s New

Lightroom Classic v15.5 introduces enhanced masking capabilities with new Feather and Edge controls, giving you finer control over photo masks and more creative editing possibilities. Cropping workflows are also improved with the ability to temporarily adjust photo opacity, making it easier to see cropped-out areas and accurately frame your images.

For photographers who want a fresh starting point after extensive edits, the new Render to DNG option allows you to save a rendered DNG file with all current edits permanently applied. This creates a non-raw version of your image that can serve as the foundation for further editing.

The release also improves catalog reliability by automatically detecting and prompting you to repair issues related to lrcat-data files. In addition, support has been added for new GoPro camera models and select GoPro, Laowa, and SIGMA lenses.

I have been using Lighroom Classic for a few years and I love the masking option. Unfortunately it no longer works. If I select eg radial gradient, the sliders provide global changes to my image. If I go to Camera Raw I can use the masking option and there are no issues. Why can I no longer use the masking option in Lightroom Classic? I am using Windows 11 and the latest version of Lightroom Classic.

    Hi @Jenine32200021sdwo,

Thanks for reporting this. A Radial Gradient should apply its adjustments only within the mask, so sliders that affect the entire image are not expected.

Since the same masking workflow works correctly for you in Camera Raw, I’d like to narrow down what is happening specifically in Lightroom Classic.

Could you please try this quick test?

    1. Open a photo with no existing masks and create a new Radial Gradient.
    2. Turn on Show Overlay and confirm that the overlay itself is limited to the expected area.
    3. Make an obvious adjustment, such as setting Exposure to -2.
    4. Let us know whether the adjustment still affects the entire image even though the overlay shows only the radial selection.

Please also check whether the same behavior occurs with Linear Gradient and Brush masks.

If possible, attach a short screen recording showing the mask overlay and what happens when you move one of the adjustment sliders. That would be particularly useful here.

Finally, please go to Help > System Info, then copy and paste the information into your reply.

I wouldn’t reinstall or make broader changes yet. I’d prefer to capture the behavior as it currently exists first.

    Thanks,
    Anshul Saini

The new masking controls look like a really useful improvement, especially for photographers who need more precise selections. I actually used this kind of masking workflow while designing images for my own website and the extra control makes it much easier to make clean, targeted adjustments. Render to DNG also seems interesting for workflows where you want to continue editing from a fully rendered version.

15.5.1 just installed itself but there’s no information about it at either of these two places - please update them so that we know what’s in it?!

    Hi @Marcus-J-T,

Thanks for flagging this. Lightroom Classic 15.5.1 was a hotfix focused on critical bug fixes rather than new features, which is why there isn’t a separate What’s New entry for it.

That said, I agree that the documentation should make it clearer when a maintenance update has been released, even when there are no new features to announce. I’ve passed your feedback along regarding the What’s New and Fixed Issues pages.

    Thanks for calling this out.

This looks like a solid update! The improved Feather and Edge masking controls and the new Render to DNG option should be especially useful for more precise editing workflows. Glad to see reliability fixes included as well.

Render to DNG only lets you do one file at a time, even if multiple are selected. Seems like a basic oversight.

    Hi @scott_4838,

Thanks for reporting this. Render to DNG is intended to support rendering multiple selected photos, not just one at a time.

Could you try one specific test for us?

In the Library module, switch to Grid view, select several photos there, then right-click one of the selected photos and choose Render to DNG.

If only one DNG is still created, please share:

    • A short screen recording showing the multi-selection and the Render to DNG command.
    • Help > System Info > Copy, and paste the information here.

That should give us what we need to investigate why the batch selection isn’t being honored.

    Thanks,

Ah, it DOES work selecting multiple files from the Library view. But it does NOT work when doing the same thing in Develop. It will read “X photos selected” but only export the first selected one.

quisiera saber acerca de una funcion nueva de “quitar reflejos” como por ejemplo los de una vitrina. Se que viene en esta nueva version pero no la estoy encontrando.

Its under the remove tool menu, hit Q to open it and there are then a series of options including remove reflections.

I find it odd and counterintuitive that original & newly rendered DNG aren’t automatically stacked. Was there a conscious decision against this? I’d like to understand the reasoning.

    Hi @alexskunz,

Good question. There was a conscious decision behind this.

Render to DNG currently places the newly rendered DNG alongside the original rather than automatically stacking them because the existing stacking behavior isn’t consistent across the Lightroom ecosystem.

The intention is to avoid extending the older stacking approach to newer workflows and instead to support this properly with a more consistent, ecosystem-wide stacking experience.

So your expectation that the original and rendered DNGs logically belong together makes sense, and the team has considered this as part of the workflow.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I’ve waited to post this just to confirm my thoughts from the past week and using Win 11, LRC 15.5 doesn’t appear as laggy or slow as previous versions which is good, hopefully it continues!

Why is there no feather option in the luminance and color range mask? Will it be added later?

Both Luminance and Color range masks already have controls to feather the ranges.

It’s not the same as feathering edges. The problem with luminance range masks is that you can easily destroy local contrast or get other weird artifacts even with range feathering / falloff on. This can be solved with additionally feathering the edges of the mask.

    Here’s what I mean:
