editing photo collage

I'm very much a learner : spent much time adding own photos to make a collage and was able to call up the saved file later to edit it, including moving pics and changing size. But now I cannot do this ie. individual pics in collage can no longer be highlighted then changed.. Have I accidentally changed some setting? Spent hours trying on this now all my efforts seem wasted, help please!
