Editing shapes after applying animation

I tried editing the fill color of a shape after animation had been applied, but I cannot see the "edit shape" panel anymore. I also tried to draw a new shape without animation, but that also did not cause the "edit shape" panel to appear. 

Is it possible to edit old shapes or new after animations have been applied to a composition? Or do I have to start over, make my edits, and then reapply my animations?
