InDesign file export loses shape in Express

When we export an InDesign file with an image in a custom shape to Express and then replace the image the custom shape is lost and the image becomes either a rectangle or a square.

Product: Adobe Express (web)

Platforms: Devices: Mac, PC, Browsers: Safari, Chrome

Steps:

  1. create an InDesign file with an image in a custom shape or rounded rectangle
  2. File > Export to Adobe Express
  3. Select an image in a custom shape or rounded rectangle

Expected result: the image comes in and retains the custom shape or rounded rectangle

Actual result: the image loses the custom shape or rounded rectangle and comes in as a square or rectangle

See attachments

Note: We had this issue a while ago then Express fixed it and it worked correctly but now seems to have reverted back to not working.

Hi @LC0731, thank you for the clear repro steps and screenshots, and especially for flagging that this worked correctly before, that's a really useful detail for our team since it points to a regression rather than a new issue.

To help us dig into this further, would you be willing to share the Express project where you're seeing this? Please duplicate it first and share the link to the duplicate, so your original stays untouched. To set sharing to allow edit access:

    → Open the project
→ Click Share in the top right
→ Under access, change it from Restricted to Anyone with the link
→ Set the permission to Can edit

You can send it to me in a DM so you’re not posting the link publicly!

I'm also passing this along to our team to investigate. I don't have a timeline yet, but I'll follow up here once I have more information.

When I import an interactive PDF created in Indesign into my file, the images that lay within the file become distorted, effecting editing workflows across out teams. This instance has been replicated with other imports we tried as well. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi @Zholt-714, thanks for the clear before/after comparison, that made this easy to identify. This matches a known issue our team has already logged, image clipping/masks not being retained on import from PDF or InDesign.

I’ve merged your comment with the thread I’m keeping updated so that way it’s all in one place!

I don't have a timeline for a fix yet, but I'll follow up here once I have more information.
