PNG and JPGs Become Lower Resolution When Imported Into Adobe Express

PNG and JPG files become lower resolution when imported into Adobe Express, as if they have been compressed.

  • I am uploading directly from my computer, not Libraries.
  • The original files are large and high resolution.
  • It it happening on the browser version as well as the desktop application, therefore it is not cache-related.
  • Restarting and refreshing the application, browser or computer makes no impact.
  • The images are not being stretched to fit the canvas, they are identical sizes.
  • I have Adobe Express premium.
  • It is mildly noticable with PNGs but impacts JPG files significantly more.
  • This is happening before exporting but affects the export also.
  • Waiting for the image to “unblur” is not a solution.

Thanks for your help!

    Hi @cristina_user123

For “share digitally on socials and website/portfolio site”, I assume you are downloading from Express as a image (png/jpeg). Are you seeing poor resolution in the downloaded output too? If so, one reason could be the pixel dimensions of the downloaded image: these are governed by the page size, not the source image. For example, if you had added a 4000x4000px, image to an Instagram Square Post Express file (1080x1080px), the downloaded image will be 1080x1080px.

    Could you check this first?

If that’s not the issue, we can investigate further; please send me a DM (using the Send message button on https://community.adobe.com/members/abhi-g-2087964)

    Thanks

    Hey Abhi,

Thanks for your reply. I’m actually creating the page / file from “Start New Design” > “Upload Media” > “Edit Original Image”. So the page size in theory is identical to the original image size?

And yes I’m seeing poor resolution in the download also.

    Happy to DM you. Thanks!

    Hi @cristina_user123,

    Welcome to the Express community!

There are a couple of different things that might be happening - I’d like to try to determine if this is a limitation of Express, or if there’s an actual bug happening.

Express does have a 4k cap on images - Express caps input image resolution to ~4K per dimension. Assets larger than that (e.g. 8000×8000) are downscaled to around 4000 px on the longest side when imported.

However, I’d like to know a bit more about what you’re using the final output for, and if the resolution is impacting your final “product”, so-to-speak. For instance, is the goal to print the high-res images? Are you using on socials, as PDFs, images, or just sharing a link?

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions, and for being so thorough in your initial post!

Hi Rose, thanks for your reply!

I’m using Express to watermark images with logos and copyright information to then share digitally on socials and website/portfolio site. I previously did this in photoshop but it seemed a bit overkill to have this when I have Express.

I just checked all the files I was using and they’re all lower than 8000 x 8000 px.

This is not for printing but it is crucial that it remains high res.

Thanks again! Hope we can find a solution 🤞
