Resize and extend image problem Vertically

When using Resize, when I extend the canvas horizontally and click extend canvas with AI, it works fine. But when I try to extend the canvas vertically, it only gives white space in the extended canvas. I cannot get the canvas to extend vertically without white space. This is a new issue that wasn’t a problem before.

Okay, thank you Rose! I will attach both of them for you. I appreciate your help in figuring this out. I’ve done it a lot in the past so don’t know what’s happening.

Hi Kathy,

I tested both of your images on my end, and vertical extend generated correctly for both, no white. That's potentially useful, because it rules out two things: it's not your images, and it's not the vertical extend feature itself. Something is causing the generation to fail on your side specifically and fill white instead of telling you it didn't work.

A few things will help me pin down which it is:

Is there a chance you've hit your AI credit limit for the month in Express? AI extend uses generative credits, and if those run low the generation can fail. You can see what's left if you click on your profile icon in Express in the top right. (included a screenshot of mine below)
Does it fail if you try it in a Chrome incognito window (or a different browser)? If it works there, something in your normal browser (an extension, usually) is blocking the generation.
Are you on a work or shared network? If you can try the same extend on a different network (even a phone hotspot), that tells us if your network is blocking the part of Express that generates the fill.

Try the incognito one first, it is the quickest, and it rules extensions in or out fast. Whatever we find, the fact that it fills white silently instead of telling you the generation failed is something I am flagging to the team separately, because you should at least get a clear message rather than a blank result.

Hi Rose,

I have 196 out of 250 credits left. And I used the Incognito browser but it had the same exact results. I think it’s weird that I can expand horizontally on images with no problem, but it won’t let me expand image with AI vertically. And the fact that you can do it is also weird. No, I’m not on a shared network.

That's a useful detail that horizontal extend works fine and only vertical comes back as white space, and "it worked before" points to something that changed recently.

A few things will help me get it to the right team:

Are you on the web app or the desktop app, and which browser and OS?
Does it happen with every image, or only certain ones? If you try a roughly square image and extend it vertically, does that fail too, or is it mainly happening on wider images?
Roughly how much are you extending vertically when it fails, a little, or a large amount? (worth testing a small vertical extend versus a large one)
When the white space appears, does it show any error or "generation failed" message, or does it just quietly fill with white?

A quick screen recording of the horizontal-works-then-vertical-fails sequence would help a lot if it's easy to grab.

Hi Rose,

I am on the desktop app, using Windows & Chrome.

It happened with another image a few days ago and I stopped working on that one. It also had an issue with vertical extending. For both images, I am working with a square, and trying to add a seam allowance as I will be printing it on fabric and need some extra edges to the design.

For this one today, I was making it 2200 x 2400 going to 2400 x 2400. So not extending it a lot, but it would only give me white one the top and bottom, while it had no problem extending it horizontally with both files.

It just fills with white, doesn’t give me an error or message.

I tried a vertical extend of the same kind you described, a near-square image going from 2400x2200 up to 2400x2400, and on my end the AI filled the new top and bottom areas correctly rather than coming back white. So the vertical extend itself is working in the straightforward case, which might point to something specific about the images you're extending rather than the feature being broken across the board.

That's useful, because it narrows where to look. A couple of things would help me test your actual case:

Could you share one of the images that fails? If you can duplicate the project and share it with me (or send the image file itself), I can try to extend it vertically on my end and see the white fill happen with your specific content.
What kind of image is it, a photo, or more of a flat graphic/design? The AI extend can struggle to generate new area on very flat or graphic-heavy images, where a photo with lots of texture extends more easily. If yours are design-style rather than photographic, that may be the piece.

Once I can see it fail on your actual image, I'll know whether it's the content or something else, and get it to the right place from there.
