After Effects doesn't pass the right media to Media Encoder

I'm having the issue with AE-ME for years already: occasionally, when sending a comp from AE to ME, some of the media, like sound in my more recent occurance of this problem, is not passed updated and previous version of the media is used. I observed it many times, even reported it once. My most recent problem is the following

  1. I have a comp with WAV file on a sound layer.
  2. I make changes to WAV, I even make sure to manually update the linked media in Project tab in AE
  3. When I send the comp fomr AE to ME and render it out — the output is still with the previous version of the WAV file.

I tripple-checked: AE links to the WAV file that was really updated, when I open it in AE as Footage preview — it plays the updated version, and even the Waveform of the layer reflects that it was updated (like I can visually see that extreme beat is I removed is gone from the spectrum), and if I render out the comp in AE — it uses this right media. But Media Encoder somehow continues to render out the comp with the previous version of that WAV file, looks like it (or AE) caches it somewhere. Quittng and relaunching ME temporarily solves the issue.

I'm on MacBook Pro 2019 with macOS 12.6

After Effects 23.1.0

Media Encoder 23.1

But as I wrote above, I've observed this issue even a couple years ago on earlier version of AE and ME on macOS.

Hi Chris,

so to answer your questitons:

>> What do you do, when you change the WAV file? Where do you perform those changes and what are the changes?

I have in parallel After Effects and Audition where I compose a multitrack, which then export as WAV locally on my mac, and then with some changes in Ae I render out video composition with this audio track using Media Encoder.

>> You say, you check that the links to the file is updated, what do you mean by this?

So for example I remove a beat from the audio composition in Au, export it as WAV, I then even check that the WAV file was really updated by preview-listening it in macOS, then I go to Ae, choose Reload Footage in the Project tab, and even see by the audio layer Waveform in Ae that the audio was updated (the spike of the beat in the waveform is gone), but when I send this comp to Me — it still produces a video with the previous version of the audio track where there's still that beat which is supposed to be gone. As I wrote, it's not 100% of the cases, sometimes it works fine. Relaunching Me usually solves the problem. But it's also not a new problem for me.

>> Would it be possible to share the .aep file with us or create a simple project containing only stock assets? If that's not possible could you create a screenrecording?

If I experience that problem again, I'll do it for sure and share.

Thank you!

Hi,

first of all thanks for reaching out to us and sharing your problem you have with Ae-->Me

I have some more questions for clarification. What do you do, when you change the WAV file? Where do you perform those changes and what are the changes? You say, you check that the links to the file is updated, what do you mean by this?

Would it be possible to share the .aep file with us or create a simple project containing only stock assets? If that's not possible could you create a screenrecording? That would really help us to get a repro state.

Thanks a lot!

Chris
