Batch Processing from PP to ME. Doesn't pass destination setting.

Using Premiere 23.6.0 and Media Encoder 23.6. Mac OS Ventura 12.5.2

When I select multiple sequences in Premiere to render using Media Encoder, the dialog pops up where you enter your output destination, preset, and format.

Click send to Media Encoder. ME opens and shows the sequences with your encode settings.

The problem is, the render destination doesn't pass even though it was just entered in PP.

It defaults to the last destination used. That is understandable if I open Media Encoder on its own to drop some files.... but is annoying when I specify a destination in PP.

This workflow used to work in previous versions of PP and ME. I am not sure exactly when this issue crept in, but it is annoying to end up with renders in unexpected places and retrace my steps to see where they went.

The workaround is:

When ME opens, select all (CMD+A) (or Lasso all) of your outputs and specify the location again.

Seems like it should be a simple fix for the developers.

In PP when I select multiple sequences in PP for export using AME, I define the destination and the Render codec. It passes all the info to AME.

AME receives the target destination data from PP. (This Works)

The discrepancy appears if I want to check the destination via the popup dialog. I lasso all of the sequences (that were just sent from PP to AME) and click the "output file".

The dialog shows a different location than what I expected. (defaults to the last AME rendered-to destination, instead of the destination I just defined)

I can navigate to the correct destination and redefine it. The dialog goes away.

If I lasso them all again and click "output file", it now shows the defined destination that I just selected in AME.

Why can't it get it the first time from PP?

All of this amounts to that.

For Example:

If I drag files from 3 different sources in Finder to AME, with the intention of transcoding them to a common folder. I expect all of the default destinations to be different because the sources are different. (They will default to the location of the original file)

The workflow would be:

  1. Lasso all the cued-up entries and click "output file".
  2. The dialog pops up allowing me to define a new destination. (Since there are multiple destinations AME has to pick something and defaults to the last AME used location. This makes sense.)
  3. I navigate to the destination I want and click "Choose"
  4. The destinations for all selected entries are set to the same destination.

Since I define the output destination in Premiere and send to AME, I expect to be able to lasso all the entries and use the "Output File" popup dialog to confirm they are being sent to my pre-defined location. Instead, it defaults to the last AME location used.

That is all. It is a lot of words for a small potatoes problem.

If I do what you have described, it will not show the actual file loaction because you selected three destinations that are different. If you select a target location, all will be changed to that location. I guess that is what is expected.

The last location set up in Expoort Mode in Premiere Pro is not shared with AME.

Wow. This sounds like a bug then. Will try to repro.

Just tried again this morning and of course, it seems to be working. However, there is one nuance.

When I export multiple sequences via ME, I want to verify that the export destination is correct. Because the output file paths are so long, they often get cut off. It is hard to tell the actual path. A simple way to check is to click on the output path. It opens a dialog that shows output destination. (This is an opportunity to change it or leave it the same.)

If I click on an individual output file it shows up in the correct place as expected.

If lasso all of the files (because I want them to all have the same destination) and click the output file, it shows a different destination, usually the last path that was used. (not where I chose the destination to be in PP)

I can change it to the correct path and it is fine. But it seems like it should pop up with the correct path from the beginning, since I just chose it in PP.

Maybe it isn't a big deal but it can be misleading.

@eckiAMETeam,

Thanks for your response here. Always appreciated, particularly when providing detailed steps.

@ericf6288858, thanks for your detailed post. Frustrating when things don't work. I'm on Win10, so not an on-point test.... I rarely export multiple sequences, so I gave this a try in 23.6. A single sequence export (to a new folder) and a 3 sequence export (to a different new folder) both opened in AME with the correction folders.

Permissions?

Just tried to repro with Premiere Pro 23.6.0.65 and Adobe Media Encoder 23.6.0.62 on macOS 14 and could not repro with these steps:
* Created a new project.

* Added a clip and a mogurt.
* Set in and out.

* Opened Export Panel.

* Set a specific folder as destination.
* Sent to AME.

* Observed the folder in AME.

Did also work for me with multiple sequences exported in one go.
