Export in XAVC HD Long GOP creates corrupted video

App versions:

Premiere Pro Version 25.6.3 (Build 2)

Media Encoder Version 25.6 (Build 98)

Platform and OS:

PC with Windows 10 Home 22H2 Build 19045.6691 and Extended Security Updates

Summary: When exporting in XAVC HD Long GOP format, the resulting video will occasionally contain glitches, similar to datamoshing, as if coded intra blocks contain illegal references to other frames. This has been observed in a test pattern that is mostly static, but has some graphical elements moving in different directions.

All attempts to remedy the issue through uninstalling and reinstalling the software, changing settings, updating drivers, using different SSDs, etc have failed to remedy the issue.

In older versions of the software (e.g. Premiere Pro 2021 and Media Encoder 2021,) exporting in XAVC HD Long GOP will not produce those artifacts on the same system (it will however instead produce video well below the target bitrate even when the content motivates a higher bitrate.)

Example 1 – Direct still image export from source project

Still image export directly from source project

Example 2 – The same frame from an XAVC HD Long GOP encode

Still image from XAVC HD Long GOP encoded file

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1.) Create a project at 1920x1080 resolution, 50.00 Hz.

2.) Assemble a few minutes worth of recognizable geometric patterns, moving in different directions, to the project.

3.) Export the project in XAVC HD Long GOP format at 50 Mbps.

4.) Import the project into Premiere Pro and play it back or add it to a new sequence. Observe if visual glitches occur during playback.

Expected results:

There should be no glitches to exported video aside from regular compression artifacts, to the extent those are expected given the codec and bitrate. The behavior should not be substantially dependent on the type of content (real-life footage, CGI, test patterns, etc.)

Actual results:

Even with a relatively simple test pattern, there are substantial glitches making the exported video completely unsuitable for delivery and playback.

Thank you.

I now tried encoding to XAVC Intra first and then endoded the result to XAVC HD Long GOP. Although there are still some artifacts, the worst artifacting disappeared. Hopefully that shines some light on what might be going on.

In testing, I'd try encoding to an all i-frame format first and then encoding to LongGOP format second.  For example, use the "XAVC HD Intra Class100 50p" preset first and then the "XAVC HD Long GOP 50Mbps 50p" second.  While it means doing two passes, it may lead to better results.

Thank you for the response.

Unfortunately I can't upload the project file since the full motion version of the test pattern is property of Swedish Television (I've designed the test pattern for them as a consultant.)

There are several moving parts in the image. The compass needle in the top left box one revolution every four seconds, the "Sveriges Television" ticker in the bottom half of the circle moves slowly scrolls from right to left, and the zone plate in the bottom right box bounces diagonally. It seems that it's the combination of those moving elements that causes the behavior. The problem is also intermittent, only happening when the moving parts align a certain way within the GOP structure, but has occurred in the same places across encodes.

I'll see if I can create another project with similar moving elements and if that too causes the issue. If so, I can share those project files. Also, I've rejuvinated an old PC I have to see what happens if I try encoding the project there. I'll share the results of that once I've tested it.

Hi @Zacabeb:

Are you able to post a project file?

I downloaded your pattern image, imported into Premiere Pro 25.6.3 under both macOS 14 and Windows 11, added it to an HD1080p 50 fps Sequence, and then exported that using the "XAVC HD Long GOP 50Mbps 50p" preset in both Premiere Pro and Media Encoder and it came out fine.

Hopefully, this can be reprodued on another system to help troubleshoot what you're seeing on our end.

I want to add that the encoded video plays back without corruption or missing data in VLC Media Player, so the file is strictly speaking decodable, but probably contains macroblock references or the like that violate the XAVC standard.
