Media Encoder Crop Tool does not work

I'm using both the current (24.1.1 build 2) MEdia Encoder as well as the Beta release. I have the same problem in both versions.

Mac Studio M1 OS 14.2.1 64gigs of Ram

I have 9X16 content that was exported as a 16X9 video with black bars on either side.

I want to crop out the black bars of the 16x9 video and have the 9x16 video as a 9x16 video.

I was under the assumption that Media Encoder's "Crop Tool" was where I could get this done.

When I set the source crop to 9x16, the source window looked as I would expect: 9x16 with no black bars.

When I look at the output, the video is still 16X9 with the black bars.

The aspect ratio in the "Basic Video Settings" panel still shows 1920x1080 even after I applied the crop.

I tried "match source" on and off, I unlinked the width/height, but the 1920x1080 aspect ratio never changed.

The ONLY WAY I can get the crop to work is to manually enter the new 9x16 aspect ratio. 608x1080

This can't be how the tool was designed to work. Am I missing something?

While it may be incredibly counterintuitive you still have 16:9 selected in your output preferences. The 9:16 is only for the cropping tool to keep the aspect ratio. You can switch to the output view to see the black areas.

We will try to update the documentation.

That's so incredibly counterintuitive... I had no idea that the portrait/landscape button was even an active button. It looked like an icon to me. Terrible UI design. Choosing 9x16 and setting the crop should be enough. Thanks for your solution!

In output you need to change from landscape to portrait mode. Did you click the icon?

I just verified. I have filed a bug and will keep you posted. Thanks for letting us know!
