Media Encoder is hanging / wheel of death / freezes while creating simple proxies

Hello,

Just started a new project and imported all my footage in Premiere. AME is hanging / wheel of death / freezes while creating simple Medium Pro Res proxies from Canon 4k footage. I tried multiple times.

- It's slow when Premiere Pro sends the files to AME and creates the queue
- The encoding starts and then freezes less than a third into the queue

MacBook Pro 2018

2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9
Ram: 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

Graphics: Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB

- Canon R5 and 5D mark IV 4k clips to Medium Pro Res Proxies

- Footage is on SSD drives

- Using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal) because it's faster
- 29 GB of RAM is dedicated to Adobe software

This is severely slowing me down, not a happy camper. What's going on Adobe? And no I am not buying a M1 MacBook, this used to work perfectly. Please help.

Hi,

sorry to hear that. I have a couple of question to help clarify the problem. Which AME & PPro version are you using? Does only the encoding freeze, or is the whole app unresponsive? When you see the freeze, could you check the activity monitor on your mac and look how much RAM AME is using? Have to tried to create a ProRes manually in AME (without using the proxy workflow). If that works, you can then afterwards attach the ProRes to the 4k file.

Best,

Chris
