This is a weird one!

Seemingly at random, whenever I attempt to playback audio, or record new audio (I'm a narrator) - Audition behaves... strangely. In either circumstance, the playhead doesn't move, no audio is played back (or recorded) - and the problem can only be resolved by restarting audition.

Any tips to fix this?

I'm afraid that your file comes up as garbage! The way to get a log file into this thread is to copy the text to the clipboard, and paste it directly - that works fine and we can read it without difficulty.

It's very unlikely that a surfeit of USB points would cause your problem, although having the focus on another app would...

Once you supply more informatio as SteveG suggested, we can give other guidance.

One thing to try is record with a different microphone and see if that works. It may be the device.

Often trouble shooting is trial and error to find the cause of the issue.

If the playhead doesn't move, it means that for whatever reason, your sound device has either disconnected itself, or been disconnected by the OS - that's the only thing that will stop the transport. Initially I think you need to tell us a bit more about your setup - MAC or PC, what OS, what sound device, recording in Multitrack or Waveform, and anything else that might be relevant. Might also be worth finding the latest log file (especially any marked Crash) from the Help menu and posting the text of it into this thread.
