Multitrack .sesx save file disappeared, backups stopped

Mac Studio running Ventura

Audition 23.2

I've never had this issue before, and it's completely baffling!

I was working on a multitrack file most of today, putting together a radio show. I'd been manually saving frequently throughout on my local drive, and have backups set to save every 10 mins. I go to close the project, and save right before -- no errors, everything looks good. However, when I go to check the save file location, the .sesx file is missing. I see a Backup folder, Imported Files, my Recorded media folder, but no .sesx file. More infuriatingly, going into the backup folder shows the last backup having been 8 hours ago! Going to Open Recent in audition gives me a "Could not be found" error.

How could it be that Audition was happily saving my file, yet seemingly to nowhere?!

Thankfully, most of my work was done in the audio files themselves, which all saved fine in the Imported Files folder. I also had my setlist written out, so it took half an hour to reconstruct -- but still, I really need to know how this could have happened!

The file is GONE. I ran Disk Drill to search for lost files, nothing ... likewise, nothing in Trash. Nothing in hidden files. Searching the whole Mac for the file in Finder results in nothing more than the outdated backups. I have NO external media connected it could have saved to. Audition's log, starting around 1pm, shows activity up until I closed the file around 11:40 pm.

I recently switched from a PC, and have never seen this problem before. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

I am having the same problem. It is infuriating because the .sesx is in my finder and then it disappears! It has been deleted. And my back-ups, which are on my hard drive and set to every 3 minutes I notice have stopped an hour ago. I appreciate that you found it was because of using save all when multiple multi-track sessions were open, because that is exactly what I have been doing sometimes. It is very useful to move between different multi-track session, but not so useful that I'm willing to lose my work. I will change my working habits because this situation is crazy-making. All the best and may the software gods be kind to us.

Unfortunately Audition often uses the location of the last thing you saved as the 'obvious' default place to save something else using the same command the next time you use it. This is a pain, because if you don't pay careful attention to the file paths, you end up with material in completely the wrong place - ie, the previous session you were working on.

I've got used to it, but I can't say that I like this behaviour at all.

-Another update-

That temp file ended up being the missing save file -- which Audition placed in the other unrelated session's folder and with its name. Somehow it completely crossed wires. I wonder if this is what happened the first time too.

This kind of unpredictable file management puts fear into me everytime I use Audition!

- Update -

It happened again ... this time I caught it! Still lost some work though because the autosaves give up if a session is open for more than a few hours.

It seems to correlate with the use of File > Save All with two (in my case) multitrack sessions open. I saw the session disappear right before my eyes in finder. Saving the project again using cmd + s, with it still open,  made the file reappear (this was after redoing my lost work).

Interestingly enough, the second multitrack session, which did save, has its temp save file still present in finder.

Perhaps this happens if Audition stays open for a long period of time -- which mine had been (over a day or two, opening and closing projects throughout).

Thanks for your input. I figured it had to be a rare bug, yet still a fairly significant one. Unless anyone else has any thoughts, I'll just be ensuring my save files are present before closing from now on. I can't imagine this happening to me during a 15+ hour podcast edit or something.

I really wish there was a clear reason for this -- I'll pay attention from now on and update if it happens again, and note if there's any identifiable patterns. Otherwise, I'll just assume this was a once in a blue moon event.

It is quite baffling when things like this happen. It's like the software is running in a little world of its own with no reference to the machine it's in at all. It's happened to me, but it's pretty rare. Something similar happens with Premiere on occasions (like yesterday) but we know with that, it's a reproducible bug - with Audition it's pretty random. It is possible that it's not Audition's fault - it could just as easily be caused by the OS as anything, since it's the OS that is actually responsible for the saves.

Thanks for your response!

That would make perfect sense, and I did consider it ... however, my autosave location is set to Within session folder. I did check my Creative Cloud backups folder to be sure, and nothing was there besides some old projects from a previous machine. I checked the folder accessible in Finder, as well as online through my Adobe account ... all the same account.

My Backup folder for this project within the save folder has backups up until 2:41pm, despite having continued to work for about 8 beyond that time. It seems it just "gave up" at a certain point.

Is this machine connected to the internet, and did you check the default location for .sesx backup saves in Edit>Preferences> Auto Save and Backup? It should say that the backup location is within the session folder, but it sounds suspiciously like yours might be set to  Creative Cloud files... which would explain where they all are, wouldn't it? And why a search didn't find them. Just a thought...
