Banding in The Sky When Adjusting Temp and Tint

Description of Issue:

When I was adjusting the temp and tint of a sunset landscape photo, I noticed a slightly bright band between the orange glow at the horizon and blue sky. The band was bright, but subtile, and it moved down from the top of the image as I reduced the temp past -7000K and/or increased tint to 40-ish on this particular image. A recording and the raw file are attached.

If the sky has an even colour and temp, then I won’t see this issue. Only during sunrise and sunset, when the horizon is much warmer than the rest of the sky.

Lightroom Classic Version Number:

15.2.1 (Tried an older version, 14.0, and had the same issue) Don’t remember seeing this behaviour on Version 13.x, but I couldn’t be wrong.

OS Version Number:

macOS Tahoe 26.4

Camera Model:

Sony A7IV (Photos taken by A1 don’t seen to have this issue, but I don’t have enough samples to draw a definitive conclusion.)

Step-by-step Reproduction Instructions:

  1. Import attached RAW file into LrC V15.2.1.
  2. -0.35 exposure.
  3. Reduce temp to between 5000K and 7000K.
  4. (Optional) Increase tint to between +30 and +50.
  5. Wiggle the side(s) to see the bright band move up and down in the sky.

The Expected Result:

Smooth transition in the sky without artifacts.

The Actual Result:

Noticeable banding in transition region between the orange glow near the horizon and blue sky.

    @TedCruzAteMySon

I encountered this sort of variable banding in sunrise/sunset skies with Adobe’s Camera Profiles for my Nikon cameras. I abandoned these camera profiles years ago and only use Adobe Color, for which there is far less banding issues.

Hi, thanks for chiming in! Adobe Color does look a lot better, in terms of the artifacts. Weird because I don’t remember seeing them with camera matching profile on older LrC versions.

    Hi all,

I posted this on “Bug Reports”, but thought here might have a wider audience.

I just updated my LrC from 13.x to 15.2.1 today and noticed an artifact on some landscape photos, specifically sunset/sunrise photos with a bit of orange glow at horizon. When I was adjusting the temp and tint of a sunset landscape photo, a slightly bright band would appear between the orange glow and blue sky. The band was brighter than the surrounding, but subtile, and it moved down from the top of the image as I reduced the temp and/or increase tint.

If the sky has an even colour and temp, then I won’t see this issue. Only during sunrise and sunset, when the horizon is much warmer than the rest of the sky. I don’t remember seeing this on older LrC either.

A screen recording can be found here: https://youtu.be/XPPfB9Xx6Tg. Please let me know if you have encounter the same issue. Thanks in advance!
