Lightroom Classic Date Filter does not remember collapsed years after restart

# Bug Report: Library Filter Date Column Does Not Retain Collapsed Years and Months After Restart

**Product:** Adobe Lightroom Classic Version 15.6
**Operating system:** Windows 11
**Affected versions:** Longstanding issue across multiple Lightroom Classic versions; currently reproducible in Lightroom Classic 15.6
**Component:** Library Module ? Library Filter Bar ? Metadata ? Date
**Severity:** Low functional severity; persistent workflow inconvenience
**Reproducibility:** Consistent across application restarts

## Problem Description

The Date column in the Library Filter Bar persistently restores certain years and months to an expanded state whenever Lightroom Classic is restarted, even after the user manually collapses all years.

The issue occurs when viewing **All Photographs**.

Specifically, Lightroom automatically expands:

- **2014:** January, February, March, April, July, November, and December, including their individual dates.
- **2022:** January, including its individual dates.

All other years remain collapsed.

The Date column also reopens scrolled to approximately January 2014 rather than the beginning of the date list.

## Steps to Reproduce

1. Open Lightroom Classic and enter the Library module.
2. Select **All Photographs** in the Catalog panel.
3. Open the Library Filter Bar and display the Metadata filter with a Date column.
4. Observe that 2014 and 2022 contain expanded months and individual dates.
5. Alt-click the disclosure triangles to collapse these years and all their months.
6. Confirm that all years are collapsed.
7. Close Lightroom Classic normally using Ctrl+Q.
8. Reopen Lightroom Classic and return to All Photographs.

## Actual Result

The previously collapsed years 2014 and 2022 automatically expand again, displaying exactly the same months and individual dates as before.

The Date column also restores its previous scroll position near January 2014.

## Expected Result

Lightroom Classic should preserve the user's chosen expanded/collapsed state across application restarts, or provide a setting to start with all years collapsed.

## Additional Testing

The following tests were performed:

| Test | Result |
|---|---|
| Collapse all years and switch between folders | Collapsed state is preserved during the session |
| Close and reopen Lightroom Classic | Previously expanded dates reappear |
| Disable Remember Each Source's Filters Separately | Problem persists |
| Save a new Library Filter preset with all years collapsed | Problem persists |
| Change the Date column to Camera and back | Problem persists |
| Change Date display from Hierarchical to Flat | No lasting improvement |
| Switch to another folder and return to All Photographs | Collapsed state remains during the current session |

## Duration and Frequency

The user reports experiencing this behavior for several years, across multiple Lightroom Classic versions.

The problem is reproducible after normal application shutdown and restart.

## Supporting Evidence

A 10-page PDF titled *Filter Bar Date Expanded.pdf* documents the expanded Date hierarchy, including the affected years and months.

An additional screenshot shows the Date column reopening at January 2014.

## Requested Resolution

Please investigate how Lightroom Classic saves and restores the expanded/collapsed state and scroll position of the Metadata Date column.

Ideally, Lightroom should either preserve the user's last-used configuration or provide a reliable way to default to all years collapsed.

I can’t find the older reports here about this bug (the “new” forum platform’s search is so abysmally bad).

I observe the same misbehavior in the Date column for previous years. I think older versions of LR recorded poison data in the catalog databse about the expanded selections in the column that trips up newer versions.

I was able to fix it in my catalog with the following procedure.  Having years of experience with the internals of the catalog database writing plugins, I think it’s safe, but USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

    1. Make two backups of your catalog, just in case.

    2. On Windows, install the “sqlite3” command if it’s not already installed. (It’s built-in to Mac.)

    3. In a Terminal / Command Prompt window, enter these commands:

    cd <path-to-catalog-folder>
    sqlite3 <catalog-name>.lrcat "delete from Adobe_variablesTable where name = 'AgLibrary_harvestedDateMdFilterExpandedItems';"
