I have a 2021 m1 pro macbook running 12.6. I just updated LR classic to 12, and upon attempting to open LR informs me that I must update my catalog from v11 to v12. it starts to update, then at the 'optimizing catalog' phase, it crashes.

I have tried restarting, running a system diagnosis test, reinstalling LR, and confirming all permissions in security/privacy.

the following is the crash log:

!!

I have images in my catalog without any associated files. They are perfect blanks when viewed in Grid. They cannot be deleted or removed. They cannot be edited or exported. They just stay there no matter what I attempt. The freakish problem has been around for years and there have not been any known solutions.

Can someone (Einstein or otherwise!) please explain what 'ghost image' means in this context? Many thanks, Paul

I have a resolution. Let me explain what did not work and eventually what worked in case it helps others facing the same issue. The explanation is a bit lengthy, but worth going through.

I had an original Catalog - call it OriginalCatalog - which worked under 11.5 but would not upgrade under 12.0. LrC 12 crashed while upgrading it and I was forced to go back to 11.5. I did not have my catalog in any external drive. But there was something wrong with my 11.5 Catalog.

OriginalCatalog had over 32000 images with all good but also 3 ghost images in between. The ghost images had turned up from nowhere in recent times and I could not get rid of them no matter what I did.

I tried to import all photos from OriginalCatalog to FailedImportCatalog in LrC11.5 but this one did not work. LrC 11.5 will fail to import the photos and abort midway.

I exported all the photos except the three ghosted ones to ExportedCatalog in LrC11.5 This worked. I went back to 12.0 and tried to open ExportedCatalog. This too caused LrC12.0 to crash while attempting to upgrade. And I was forced to return to 11.5

In the final attempt, I opened ExportedCatalog under LrC11.5. I closed it and started a new file to import from ExportedCatalog which was successful and let’s call this catalog SuccseefulImportCatalog. I downloaded 12.0. I tried to

- open/upgrade OriginalCatalog and as usual, it crashed/failed
- open/upgrade ExportedCatalog and as before, it crashed/failed
- open-upgrade SuccessfulImportCatalog and it ……worked!!!!

So, export followed by import followed by upgrade worked. Of course, I have no idea why this one did. But for now, I feel like Einstein.

My catalog is not stored on the external drive. The new LRC 12.0 keeps crashing as it tries to upgrade the old catalog. The upgrade process would work for a while and then suddenly quit with all upgrade files somewhat created (ie, still not able to open them on their own). I went back to 11.5 and exported all the photos as a new catalog which too will not open in 12.0. Effectively, some image or images - because of the previews or whatever reason - are not being upgrade-able to 12.0 catalog version, making 12.0 useless for me. Do anyone else have the same issue? Posting this to make sure that the bug I am encountering is not due to external drive storage.

thanks - it doesn't sound like there is a fix, so I will just downgrade back to version 11 for the timebeing

I updated my LRC to 12.0 and none of my catalogs open. I've tried a couple of fixes found on the Discussions and none of them work(so I went back to 11.5 so that I can do my work). Has anyone else had this problem?
