P: Edit In External Editor does not work/function

I can not send images from LR4 to any external editor via Photo>Edit In. My system is Mac OS 10.7.3. Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results. This occurs whether the images have the 2012 Process Version applied or not. My external editors are primarily PSE10 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0. This is an important part of my workflow.

I have reinstalled PSE10 and updated to the newest version of Silver Efex Pro.

Beth and Marlene,

Yes, if CS5 is found on the computer, LR4 will always show it as the default external editor. You need to make PSE your secondary external editor. To do this, go to LR4's Preferences and choose External Editing. In the second section of the resulting dialog, click on the "Choose" button. Then, you'll navigate to wherever the Photoshop Elements Editor is located on your hard drive. You must direct it to Photoshop Elements Editor, not just the icon for Photoshop Elements. I can probably help find the proper path if you need help, but I'd need to know which version of PSE and which operating system.

Marlene, I can't really answer about the technical details that make this work. But, I and many others can attest that it does work. Something in the install of CS5 sets up LR4 so that the Edit In function can work properly. Yes, I am using a Mac (OS 10.7.3).

I'd be interested in your answer to Beth as well, as I'm hesitant to install one more Adobe program, which is so large. I currently have Elements 8 and 9, plus LR3&4. And the issue with CS5 becoming the default external editor is something that I would not want either.

Julie, How do you edit in PSE 10. I installed the trial of CS5 and now CS5 is the default external editor and I can't see a way to change it.

Do you 1) Have a Mac and 2) Use Photoshop Elements through LR4. My question is now that you've installed the trial version of CS5, and you say you don't have to use it, what did you gain by doing this?

Marlene, no you do not have to edit in CS5. In fact, you never even have to launch it. Just having it installed on your computer will allow you to use the 'Edit In' command in LR4 to invoke PSE or any other external editors you use. I installed the trial of CS5 and can now use PSE10 and a host of other external editors.

I went to the link that you provided but did not locate the "vote" you're referring to. I'd like to participate but need some advice as to where to find this. Thanks.

I have the same problem with the same operating system. As you've seen from the messages, Adobe is recommending that we install CS5's trial version and that people who've done this can now access "Edit in". However, no one has yet answered whether we would have to Edit in CS5, or could use the Elements program that I currently use.

I remember hearing that people who bought LR3 a month before the release of LR4 did not have to pay for the upgrade. Maybe Adobe would be willing to change it for you. However, once they fix the problem, LR4 will have more features, i.e. being able to e mail images directly.

It sure would be nice if someone would give us an update.......If I would have known there was an issue I would have bought Lightroom 3 instead.....Maybe this is an option for folks that just purchase LR4 and had no other version.
