P: Edit In External Editor does not work/function

I can not send images from LR4 to any external editor via Photo>Edit In. My system is Mac OS 10.7.3. Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results. This occurs whether the images have the 2012 Process Version applied or not. My external editors are primarily PSE10 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0. This is an important part of my workflow.

I have reinstalled PSE10 and updated to the newest version of Silver Efex Pro.

I too can't now use Nik Software's Silver Efecs Pro 2 (latest update) and Perfectly Clear LR since installing the Lightoom 4 upgrade. The suggestion to delete the co.adobe.Photoshop.plist file doesn't either as that plist file isn't there. Come on Adobe, fix this please!

I just received a mail by Nik software. Among other things they say:

"Important information on compatibility of Nik Software plug-ins with Lightroom 4

Adobe update for Lightroom 4 to be released soon

Some users have experienced problems when using external plug-ins within Lightroom 4. The reason for this a bug in the retail version of Lightroom 4, which unfortunately may also affect Nik Software plug-ins under certain circumstances. Adobe is already working on a solution, which will be available with their next update.
Upon release of this update by Adobe Nik Software plug-ins can be used within Lightroom 4 as usual. Please make sure to download the newest version of your plug-ins before using them in Lightroom".

I shared this info just to let everybody know that Adobe, Nik and most probably the other plugin companies are collaborating to solve the problem. When I noticed the bug in my just-bought LR4 I was very upset, as most of us. But seeing that companies, and especially Adobe are working seriously on it, makes me feel better.
We are not being left alone with the software we bought, let's be patient.

A suggestion to Adobe customer care: maybe sending a mail to customers who bought LR4 on Adobe's site, explaining the situation, could be a good way of letting customers know you care about them. This will not avoid completely angry messages on fora, because many people may have bought it somewhere else, but sure it would help in keeping things smooth.

Good work everybody!

Same workaround works for elements.

"When does the trial expire if CS5 is never launched?"

It shouldn't expire, but even if it does, it wouldn't affect the workaround.

"Where is the CS5 uninstaller located?"

It's in the Photoshop application folder - it's called "Uninstall Adobe Photoshop CS5"

Julie - thank you so much for providing an update with an estimate on the timing. This is very much appreciated.

I solved the problem by downloading CS5 (OS X). I never opened CS5.

When does the trial expire if CS5 is never launched?

Where is the CS5 uninstaller located?

Thanks.

Julie, is there a similar work-around for PSE 10? I know you all are working very hard to resolve these issues. 🙂

As others have noted, a possible workaround to use until then is to install the trial version of Photoshop CS5 from http://www.adobe.com/downloads/. I realize this is a bit heavy but if you need a faster solution this might be an option for you.

We are going to escalate a release candidate of 4.1 to make a build available with this fix as soon as possible. My goal is to make this happen within the next two weeks, but there are a couple of other issues we want to take care of at the same time, and we need to make sure they are sufficiently tested before we post the build.

My apologies that this slipped through.
