P: Feature request: Handling RAW+JPG -> Show JPG

I misspoke. I wasn't thinking it would actually create 2 thumbnails, but that you'd see it AS IF there were 2, side-by-side in the preview, but created (as an option, perhaps with modifier) from one actual thumbnail. So I think we would like the same thing in this instance. I just wouldn't want to necessarily see the JPEG instead of the Raw. I'd want to be able to see both.

Wouldn't it be simpler for LR to make a single feature that works in either Library or Develop modules, letting the user choose to view one or the other, or side by side, even though the Preference is set to not separate the raw from the JPEG? If this feature is instituted, I would think it should be an on-the-fly choice, rather than a preference, or a new default (the bit where you say my initial view of raw would be the JPEG if I hadn't modified the raw), with the default (what users have long been used to) honored UNTIL the user adds a modifier or something that allows the user more options.

Currently, what I've seen others do and do myself, is set my own default for conversion, rather than use LR's own default. I assume you find your in camera JPEGs are too divergent to make presets  useful???

Of course, the in camera JPEG will always look better than the raw conversion. The point of the raw conversion is typically to be flat and merely offer the user the starting point for edits. That's where custom presets come in handy, if you can create ones that are a good starting point under various conditions.

But I see the point of being able to look at the JPEG without treating it as a separate file that has to be deleted as a separate file. If I could review the B&W version of my raw file without having to deal with it separately, I could start the culling process and get rid of raw + JPEG at one go. I'd only hang on to those I wanted to process, and I wouldn't have to deal with a lot of leftover JPEGs.

Thank you for your comments. I must admit that some points are not very clear.

1) If your Lightroom settings are DO NOT "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos", you only see one photo (thumbnail) for both, and that's OK, that's what I want. In my workflow, I try to do everything within Lightroom: Import all RAW+JPEG, rate photos, reject bad ones, ... Deleting is easy because one delete deletes the RAW file and the JPG and XMP sidecar files.

2) "Before and After" in Develop module: I want to be able to compare the SOOC (Straight Out of Camera) sidecar JPEG in the "Before" part of this view, with the results after developing in LightRoom, in the "After" part of this view. Different thumbnails are not realy needed and is not the way Lightroom currently  handles files in DO NOT "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" mode.

Do you really think that 2 thumbnails will be usefull? This may be an option, showing 2 different thumbnails (like virtual copies) one for the SOOC camera JPEG, and one for the developed raw? And automaticaly grouped into a stack? But I think I do not need it. 1 thumbnail is OK for me, if I can access the SOOC JPEG easily.

3) Mixed mode: This mode did not exist yet: In library module "Loupe view", you should be able to select some kind of "mixed mode" where JPEGs are shown (rendered) if no developer settings are present, and Lightroom RAW rendering for photos with developer settings. In his mode,  JPEG will have priority only if no developer settings are present. Of course, it should be possible to deactivate this "mixed mode" and to switch easily between the present lets say "standard mode" and the new "mixed mode".

PS: I am a Fuji X RAW+JPEG shooter. Fuji X Trans SOOC JPEG files are very different from (and much better than) the LightRoom default rendering.

Perhaps at least in the compare feature of library module (XY) :
If a single raw+jpg photo is selected, compare the raw rendered with my lightroom process versus the jpg as processed by my DSLR with its shooting settings ...

Are you saying you just want a preference to see the JPEG you shot when with a Raw + JPEG setting, but without actually treating it as 2 separate files? If that's in the Compare View as a preference in the Library module, I think that would be a nice option not to have to import separately—which takes an extra step to get rid of if you only imported separately to see what kind of JPEG the camera created.

Before and After—what do you mean showing doesn't mean displaying 2 thumbnails? Why wouldn't I want the camera JPEG in the Before, and the raw converted in the After, as in 2 thumbnails?

 What's Mixed Mode? I use LR in a somewhat limited fashion and I don't find that mode. I wouldn't want the JPEG to automatically have priority in the display in either module (I shoot in-camera B&W JPEG because it doesn't affect the raw file), although I'm always fine with options that help everyone customize their workflow.

I'm OK with that idea. It would be great !
