P: Gen Remove now changes elements outside the painted mask

The update to the Generative Remove AI model in Lightroom Classic 14.5 has ruined it, as it now changes elements outside the painted mask, making it more or less unusable in many situations.

Well, I have been waiting for a fix to the Generative AI removal since the last update (14.5), and it is still not fixed with 14.5.1.

VERY disappointed.

Still grabbing area outside selected area (like changing an eye that wasn't in the selecttion but near it) and  removing the selcted object but alson making the skin under the removed item (hair) noticeably lighter.  It worked perfectly before the update before 14.5.1!! Just put it back like it was.

Hi @angela_1815! Thank you for reaching out! At its current stage, Gen AI is about enhancing creativity and productivity. But like any tool, it works best when paired with human oversight. Here are some tips to get the most out of Gen AI in LrC:

1) Include shadows in your mask: Select the entire object, including its shadow, to help the AI understand the context better.

2) Use Object Aware mode: This refines the mask automatically and helps preserve surrounding tones.
3) Use Heal or Clone for small areas: Traditional tools offer more control for subtle edits, such as stray hairs on skin.
4) Apply Generative Remove before cropping or masking: Cropped or masked areas can confuse the AI

I didn't have to use any tips before the 14.5 and 14.5.1 updates. It worked fine before the updates.

The generative remove feature not only has been getting worse ( i feel) but its trying to remove parts of an image that lie outside the parameters of what i selected. Can this be addressed?

I just updated to 14.5 and am frustrated by this issue, too. Especially since I do weddings/portraits, and when I select only what I want removed in the background, the updated ai remove tool now changes areas outside of the selected area, which often is part of someone's face/hair. Which may seem small, but are noticable on big moments and people's faces. (I tried to find an example where it did a worse job on a remove, but had already edited over it, so can't show it.) I'm about to switch to an old Lightroom version because it used to be so much more accurate, and this version is slowing me down.

Selected area to remove:

One option it gave me, where it changes her ear and hair shape up top outside of the selected area:

And another option it gave me, where it altered her hair under her ear and squished her ear:

Another example: Here's the before: (notice her hair shape)

I did multiple selections for ai removal, and here are the results it gave me:

Looking back at the selected areas of the items removed, neither of them touched her original hair, and should not have affected her hair.

@Thomas Steen Petersen the original JPEG Captures would be preferable. If possible, Export them as DNGs with the edits also. Just a couple of examples are necessary.

Ok, I’ll send them as DNG. It’s quite late in my time zone now, so I’ll do it tomorrow. I hope that works for you.

The originals used as examples were shot as JPEG files. I’ll be happy to upload those, but if you prefer RAW files for the Camera Raw team, I’ll need to create some new examples based on pictures shot in RAW. Please let me know what you prefer.

Hello everyone,

Since the latest Lightroom update, I’ve been experiencing serious issues with the Generative AI healing tool. It used to work flawlessly, but now the results are very poor compared to before, even though the update was supposed to make the tool more powerful.

For example, when I try to remove a small acne spot while keeping the natural skin texture, the tool modifies a much larger area than the one I selected and produces unnatural results.

This happens both on my computer and on my mobile device (I use Lightroom Cloud). Has anyone else noticed the same behavior?

I’d also like to know if it’s possible to revert to the previous version of Lightroom, because this tool is absolutely essential for my workflow.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

@Thomas Steen Petersen

I see you posted some JPEG examples.

The Camera Raw team is requesting a few original files of those that are exhibiting the issue. Can you supply these?
If so, please share them via Dropbox or similar and share the link with me.

Thank you!

@angela_1815: "...after 14.5 update...having to constantly "update" masks."

That's a separate issue unrelated to the problem in this thread. Many others have experienced the problem:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/p-ai-masks-require-updating-and-or-disappear/m-p/15347415

I recommend that you follow that thread for updates. Most of the people reporting issues there use the third-party Imagen AI service, which is most likely the culprit. Do you use Imagen AI?

I second this about it making people look like mutant/ humanoid. The prior version did pretty well with blending human features & this one looks like the AI doesn't understand human features at all.
