Externally edited images do disappear from the filmstrip when a filtered view is active.
To reproduce the problem:
1. Create several folders with several tiff images.
2. Import the images in Lightroom.
3. Add the 'flower' keyword to every image.
4. In the Library module, in the 'Keyword List' panel click the arrow right to the 'flower' keyword. This will make Lightroom to show all the images that has the keyword 'flower'.
Now comes the problem.
Edit one of the images on the filmstrip in PS (Ctrl+E). After changing the file and saving it, when returning to Lightroom the image disappears from the filmstrip.
When checking the image in the folder (clicking the correct folder in the Library) it shows up. When applying the 'flower' filter, the image isn't visible anymore.

The original topic in which this was posted involved a specific problem with keywords. Your issue appears to be different.

Please reference the new conversation here: Lightroom: Image edited in Photoshop disappears from Lightroom

I do not use keywords but cannot figure this out. I am losing my previous edited image in LR (after pulling the next one into PS) the entire edit is gone. This has happened since updating to PS 2020 and I run Catalina on Mac - Please help

Hi Todd,

I tried that and it didn't fix it for me. Just as you suggest, after a relaunch I started with Flat view, selected the Keyword List right-arrow for the keyword, edited my psd in Ps (Open Original), made a change and saved. The psd disappears in Lr once saved. Switched to Hierarchical view, selected the Keyword List right-arrow for the keyword again. My psd image now displays. Changed to Flat View and selected the Keyword List right-arrow for the keyword. The psd disappears.

I think there is plenty here for Adobe to track this down easily.

It seems the problem doesn't occur in the Hierarchical view. The only way I have found to get the externally edited image visible with the keyword filter on in Flat view is to relaunch Lr.
Try switching to Hierarchical view, reselect the Keyword List right-arrow for that keyword, switch the Keyword Filter back to Flat view, and reselect the Keyword List right-arrow for that keyword. That fixes the issue on my system without having to restart LR. Agreed it's cumbersome, but it may give Adobe a clue as to the root cause and a fix.

Here’s another twist. After creating the Ps edit copy, relaunch Lr so that the Ps edit copy is visible when the Metadata filter is open and the keyword filter applied in Flat view mode. The edited Ps copy will be displayed.

Select the edited Ps copy and chose Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 to open it again in Ps. Make a change, then click Save and immediately switch back to Lr. If you are quick enough, you will see the psd copy still visible, but then disappear once the save operation is completed.

The bug recipe also fails in my LR CC 2015.12 (6.12). But I can't find any previous bug reports here about this, unfortunately, which is too bad.

Switching the Library Filter> Metadata> Keyword selection filter to 'None' and back doesn't reveal the Edit in PS image file. If you switch to a Text> Keyword filter it appears, but switching back to the Metadata> Keyword selection used by the Keyword List filter it's no longer visible. As mentioned by *John R. Ellis and *Anthony Blackett a restart of LR is required to "fix" the issue.
