P: JPEG File Export to DNG Disables Import Module & Synchronize Folder Functions

Using LR 8.1with Windows 10 ver1803 when exporting a JPEG file to DNG file format the DNG file does not appear in the LR catalog and the Library module’s Import and Synchronize Folder functions become grayed-out and unusable. Closing and reopening LR restores the Import module and Synchronize folder functions and the DNG can be imported. The DNG file is being created, but not added to the catalog. Using any other file format (raw, TIFF,PSD) works as expected with no issues. I uninstalled LR 8.1 and chose the option to ‘Delete All Preferences,’ but the issue remains!

The JPEG to DNG file format export fails as described above when using the below Export module settings. If 'Add to Stack’ in the Export module's 'Export Location’ pane is NOT checked the JPEG to DNG Export works as expected.

Rikk, LR Classic 8.3 fixes the issue on my Windows 10 system. Thank you and the Adobe Engineering Team!

Lightroom Classic 8.3 was released today and contained a fix for this issue. Please update to 8.3 and verify that you are no longer seeing the issue. Thank you!

Hi Todd,

I am able to reproduce the issue. As you mentioned, it is happening with JPEGs and only when "Add to Stack" option is checked. We will file a bug and investigate.

Thanks,
Chinoy

Jim, thanks for confirming! I'm guessing this is due to some kind of system race-condition between the DNG creation and Catalog update processes. I'm using a recently built high-performance system with i7-8700K six core processor, 32 GB DDR4 RAM 2666Mhz, and a PCIe - M.2 2280 1 TB SSD system drive. It has absolutely no other issues running LR!

Rikk, I can repro on both 10.14.2 and Win10 1809. Specifically if I export with "Add to Stack" unchecked, the export proceeds and the DNG is added back to the catalog. However, if I check the "Add to Stack" box the DNG is NOT added back into the catalog (and any subsequent attempt to export with "Add to Stack" unchecked will then fail until Lightroom is restarted).

Furthermore, after a failure the Synchronise Folder option disappears completely from the right-click menu and is greyed out in the Library menu.

As Todd says, restarting LR restores functionality.

Because I reacted quite quickly when the "early" update was initially sent out last week, I'm running 8.2 on both systems.

Matches my settings Todd.  Let's see if someone else can duplicate the issue.

I totally agree and don't use it, but the capability is there and does work for some people (i.e. *Rikk Flohr).
I ran across this experimenting to find a way to save virtual copies Develop, Keywords, etc. metadata alongside the companion original file. It actually works for all settings except WB and Camera Profile. The virtual copy's JPEG Export file can be resized to Standard Preview size, and low Quality setting to reduce the file size. I then tried to export that JPEG to DNG file format and see if the embedded WB and Camera Profile could be recovered. ERGO–I was hit by this bug or something unique to my system, which remains elusive.
