P: Library Filters cannot be enabled / Color Label Option Missing

After upgrading to v15.2, the Library Filters cannot be enabled. Clicking the Library menu ‘Enable Filters’ will just give Library Filters Off each time is it clicked. The check mark remains on the Enable Filters menu. Using the hotkey Ctrl-L  does not work either, just keep saying Library Filters Off. No way to enable the Library Filters. I have also restarted my Windows 11, and still cannot enable Library Filters.

Moderators, @Rikk Flohr_Photography, please merge with this bug report, in which another user reported a successful workaround for the problem reported here:

But the entries for filter presets are now redundant:

I just filed a bug report on that:

It’s a harmless bug -- the duplicates are identical. Thanks for calling this out.

    1. Did Axel’s suggestion of doing File > Import From Another Catalog avoid the problem?

    2. Did the steps provided in the other thread on this issue fix the problem?

     @stefanfuertbauer-com @fargone.pro @Terry31540669eler:

Try the steps that worked for @thereishope

    1. Go to Library and then Grid view (the menu command View > Grid, or type “g”).

    2. If the Library Filter bar at the top of Grid view isn’t showing, do View > Show Filter Bar.

    3. Click the drop-down menu on the right end of the Library Filter bar, next to the lock icon:

    4. In that drop-down menu, select Filters Off:

To help others, let us know if these steps worked for you.

Yes - THANK YOU - this indeed resolved the problem for me completely, although I do see redundant filter presets in the pop-up (since I clicked “Restore Default Presets” as suggested earlier). Is there a away to get that sorted, too?

I’ve now also found the problem why there were redundant filter presets. In '/Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Filter Presets' I found not only english but also german preset files. I deleted them all, restarted LrC, clicked ‘Restore Default Presets’ and now there are only the english ones again. Also the ‘Filters Off’ preset is there, which when clicked brings back the Toggle-functionality with the shortcut Cmd+L

I’ve meanwhile found out, that his issue might be catalog-related cause I does not occour in all of my catalogs.

Create a new catalog and import several images. Then check.

If it’s work I would import all images ti the new catalog. Choose “File - Import from Another Catalog” Then select your old catalog to import. In the import dialog choose to import all photos, but do not move them.

That’s not really an appropriate solution but a workaround. I’d rather prefer Adobe to fix this bug!

What was the result of step 2?

    2. In the Library Filter bar, click the drop-down menu (to the left of the lock icon on the right) and do Restore Default Presets.  That won’t delete any filter presets you’ve saved, but it sometimes fixes corrupted filter state.

Re 2) Didn’t fix it either. But the entries for filter presets are now redundant:

Re 3) I occasionally have 30+ file names in text filter but that was the very first thing I’ve cleared!

I am experiencing the same thing. There are no color filter options, and I have reset preferences as well as enabled and restored everything that I can possibly try. I agree that there is a glitch in upgrade v15.2. I am running Mac OS 26.3.

@stefanfuertbauer-com now I’ve also lost all my preferences…

Did you save a copy of your old preferences as the article I linked to above instructs? If so, you can restore your original preferences.

Unfortunately it didn’t fix the problem, but now I’ve also lost all my preferences...

The problem still remains: when I open LR and go to any folder and press Cmd+L, a pop-up saying “Library Filters Off” appears although filters are already off. In the menu Library / Enable Filters is checked, the filter toolbar says “No Filter” and the padlock symbol is open. When I press Cmd+L again, the pop-up appears again and no filter is activated.

When I for example click on “Attribute” in the filter toolbar, the filter gets activated and works as expected, it says “Flagged” next to an open padlock symbol in the filter toolbar. When I press Cmd+L the filter gets deactivated and stays deactivated, whatever I do. I can’t toggle it.

For me it appears LR thinks filters are active and can’t deactivate them or clear any sort of internal state/flag for active filter.

This problem only appears in 1 out of 7 catalogs of mine. Unfortunately in my main business catalog. I’ve opened LrC with the Option key and tested integrity of the catalog in doubt. No errors founds, no difference in behavior. I’ve completed a catalog back with both options of testing integrity and optimizing enabled, no difference.

I’m out of ideas but really want this sorted - it’s a kind of minor function but which I use numerous times in my workflow.

@stefanfuertbauer-com It does not occur in all of my catalogs.

LR stores much of the current state of the Library Filter bar in the catalog, and some of the state in Preferences.

    1. What was the result of resetting preferences?  If you haven’t tried that, do it, it only takes 5 minutes, and you can restore the old preferences if it doesn’t help (as detailed before).  Resetting preferences is always the first and easiest diagnostic to try.

    2. In the Library Filter bar, click the drop-down menu (to the left of the lock icon on the right) and do Restore Default Presets.  That won’t delete any filter presets you’ve saved, but it sometimes fixes corrupted filter state.

    3. Do you remember if you pasted a large amount of text into the Text filter box?  There are known bugs with that.

Clearing corrupted Filter bar settings from the catalog is more involved and thus the last thing to try.
