P: Library Previews not updating

  • December 27, 2021

This hasn't ever happened to me previously and I edit hundreds of images a day, as a wedding photographer. Has only appeared since latest update (so far as I've seen).

Edit an image in Develop mode, normally the thumbnail at the bottom would auto update with the new preview/look. It doesn't anymore. Go to Library mode to check, no, no update to the preview, it's still the old look. Force rebuild standard preview (and 1:1 preview) no effect. The Library preview will not update to the new look created in Develop mode.

Quit LR, then restart it, the preview is updated.

Even did a Sync of one process, which was converting to BW across 5 images. Four of the images changed profile to the new look, the 1st image in the group didn't. Stuck with previous old version of the look. Quit and restart LR it changed to new look.

I'm having the same issue on PC

I am also experiencing this issue, and it has only started happening within the past month.  I'm on Windows 10 Pro, version 21H2, with Lightroom Classic 11.3.1.  Any adjustments I make in the Library module (typically via Auto Tone or other Quick Develop options) do not reflect at all in the Library preview.  However, the adjustment badge shows up on the photo in the filmstrip, and the edits show when I switch to the Develop module.  Only when switching back to Library from the Develop module does the preview finally update.  As a note, the histogram also does not change until I go to the Develop module.

Restarting the application via Edit > Preferences > Restart Lightroom Classic resolves the issue temporarily, but it has consistently come back.  I haven't yet observed the cause or timing.

Same here.  My develop edits are not displaying when I return to grid View.  It's very annoying.  I am trying to process thousands of images for weddings and I cannot quickly assess my work without the Grid View showing my edits.

Hi, all! The latest update with Lightroom Classic 11.3.1 has become a huge time suck. When I edit, I like to apply the same settings to the other images taken in that same spot/lighting. And then I usually hit N to bring up those pics in LIBRARY view to compare them all and make sure the settings work on each one. Or I will cull down to my fave few of the batch.

Well with the latest update, the synced settings take a significant chunk of time to apply. And in my normal workflow, if I apply the sync settings and hit N like I normally do, the edits don't apply at all to the images when in LIBRARY MODE. I have to go out back into DEVELOP mode and then wait for the settings to update (and sometimes, they don't until I open the image in the main stage. The thumbnails will not reflect the changes.  So I have to literally go through each pic until the settings update. This is a huge wrench in the efficient process I have honed over the past 15 years. Is this something others are experiencing? Here is an example. In case it's not clear in the video, I start off doing the “Ctrl + Shift + S" to apply the same edits to the selected photos.

Setting status to Investigating

Some customers are reporting that reverting to 11.2 provides relief on the issue. This can be used as a workaround until an update is released.

I'm seeing this too, it's started happening just within the last couple of weeks. As well as images not updating when in Library view, pressing F to view images in fullscreen also often shows the 'old' version.

I'm on 2021 MacBook Pro 14" with Apple M1 Pro, 32gb memory, running latest version of MacOS Monterey, so it's definitely not an issue with my OS/laptop being out of date.

I'm not sure why but it started working again today. I could not reproduce the bug anymore. The difference today was that I used the big import button to add photos to the library.

The past week I was using the add folder function from the folder list. Maybe using this function first thing after updating Lightroom messed up the preview caching, and then using the big import button fixed it. See if this fixes it for you.

I'm not able to reply to my own bug report. Maybe someone else could post my solution to it.

Issue:
Scenario A

  • After making first develop edits to unworked RAW files in develop module, library previews only show updates for half a second before changing back to the old embedded preview. Attempting to manually build standard sized previews shows error "already exists". The previews only show the current updates after relaunching Lightroom Classic, or after entering develop module to make secondary edits.

Scenario B

  • After pasting develop settings to unworked RAW files, library previews are not automatically generated, even after entering and exiting develop module without making further edits. Must then manually generate standard-sized previews.

Scenario C

  • After pasting different develop settings to worked RAW files, previews are not updated. Attempting to manually build standard sized previews shows error "already exists". The previews only show the current updates after relaunching Lightroom Classic, or after entering develop module to make secondary edits.

Provide Lightroom Classic version: 11.3.1
Provide OS and version: Windows Pro 21H2

Provide good steps to reproduce the behavior:

Scenario A

  • Import RAW files to library
  • Enter develop module for an unworked RAW file
  • Make develop edits for the first time
  • Enter Library grid view, updated preview shows for half a second then switches back to the old embedded preview. Loupe and compare view also shows the old embedded preview.
  • Build standard-sized previews error says "already exists"
  • Must either relaunch Lightroom or enter develop module to make additional edits, for the preview to update

Scenario B

  • Import RAW files
  • Copy and paste develop settings to unworked RAW files for the first time
  • Previews not updated, shows the old embedded preview
  • Enter develop module and exit without making further edits, previews not updated
  • Must manually build standard-sized preview

Scenario C

  • Copy and paste different develop settings to worked RAW files
  • Previews not updated, shows the old preview in grid, loupe, and compare views
  • Build standard-sized previews error says "already exists"
  • Must either relaunch Lightroom or enter develop module to make additional edits, for the preview to update

Expected result: Lightroom Classic should show updated previews
Actual result: Lightroom Classic shows old previews

Same issue, I brought it up in Discussions forum last week (didn't have time to work out how to file a bug report).

I'm getting something similar, when pasting develop settings to other RAW images in Lightroom CC, the compare and loupe views are not updating the previews. Only the develop view is showing the updates. I have to then change something in the develope settings, then switch back to the compare or loupe view to see an update to the preview.

When I try to build previews, it says previews already exist.

I updated to 11.3.1 a few days ago, and I don't know if the problem with the previews started before or after the update.

After croping it and going back to the grid view it does not always show the modified crop.

Steps:

- In grid view, double click on a photo to open in Loupe.

- Click R and do some cropping.  For example, change to 16x9.

- Click Done.

- Click G to go back to grid view.

The image does not show the new crop of the photo, it looks just the way it was originally.  The worse is that if I double click on the photo again, it does not show the crop I just did.

Problem is that sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't.  I am not sure when it started, probably since V11.3.

As a first troubleshooting step, try resetting LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it.

The problem ususally goes away after restarting and, after a while, it shows again.

I'll mark it as correct in a few days if the problem doesn't come back.

Changes to an image that I'm making in the Develop module are sometimes (but frequently) not reflected in the Library module (in all views i.e. Grid, Loupe, Compare, Survey). If I close LR and reopen it then the changes are shown. I have tried resetting the preferences but it has made no difference.

I can't seem to find out why it happens on some images and not others as I'm testing near identical images taken just seconds appart.

This sounds more like a problem with the Previews cache (not up-dating).

Having reset Preferences, now try a 'refresh' of the Previews cache.

The method in this link 'deletes' all the Peviews and they may take considerable time to re-build as you view images in the Catalog. (Or select 'All Photographs' and set the re-build going for the whole catalog,  go and  have a cuppa, or two!- Menu: Library > Previews > Build Standard Size Previews.
