P: LrC 15.5 Video Files Issues (Windows)

I updated to LrC 15.5 a few hours ago. Since then LrC has problems with video files. The first problem I noticed was that when I tried to synchronize a folder that had two new video files. After a couple of minutes I got the error message “An unknown error occurred while reading the video file. (2)”. I had just completed those files with DaVinci Resolve so I went back and produced the same files again to check if DR had made an error. When I tried again with the new files but got the same errors. I was able to play both videos without any issue using VLC Media Player, so they seem to be OK. I then shutdown LrC and did a backup including optimizing the catalog, and then restarted it to see if that made any difference, but same error. Then I started looking at other videos that were already in LrC and found that when browsing them in the Library module, most of them pop up a message “There was an error working with the video”. They will not play in LrC but work fine with VLC Media Player.

Prior to upgrading to 15.5 I did not experience any of these errors. Is anyone else seeing these problems?

Adobe has acknowledged this problem with videos in LR 15.5 on Windows:

So far, the only known workaround is to roll back to LR 15.4.

In the Library, I’m trying to play video in Lightroom Classic with the latest updates. I receive an error saying, “There was an error working with the video”. It does this to all videos. I’ve restarted my computer and closed the program and restarted more than once. If I remove the file from Lightroom then try to import it back it says, “Preview unavailable for this file.” When I click import it says “An unknown error occurred while reading the video file (1).” Some videos in other folders work. In more than one folder they do not play. This problem began after I updated the last Lightroom Classic to 15.5 release.

Same here. I upgraded today to 15.5, unfortunately before reading this thread.

Every video I have in my library returns the error “There was an error working with the video”. Each of those videos can be played back using different software.

Platform: Windows 11, NVIDIA 4070Ti Super

Would be nice to get this fixed asap.

It was irritating to discover this issue. Lodged a help call - helpful guy but he did not know what the problem was and it took at least half an hour of trying thins until he tried the roll back - which is fine but means I cannot try out the new masking sliders - a great step forward I would like to use!

Attempting to import a UHD video, produces an error message suggesting the file is corrupt. Attempting to review an older imported UHD video produces an error message, suggesting an unkown error.

Sounds like a 15.5 bug rather than a problem with your video files, especially since VLC plays them fine and older videos stopped working too. try disabling GPU acceleration and, if that doesn’t help, roll back to 15.4 until Adobe addresses it.

Unfortunately this is another example of the poor support for video files in LrC. It seems that Adobe has difficulty with newer video codecs, even though every other video app I have plays everything without problems. Being able to manage video digital assets and play video regardless of codec seems to be a low bar that is cleared by lots of other apps, but Adobe LrC seems to have problems. I assume this is more a lack of interest and commitment than it is a technical challenge.

I also have this video issue with Lightroom 15.5.
Only videos recorded with smartphones in HEVC can’t be played.
Videos recorded in AVC work well.
