P: Photoshop "Export As" resets Lightroom Classic edits/metadata.

Ran into this issue for the first time this week, although I've had the same workflow for years.

Edit RAW images in Lightroom Classic > select photo and "Edit in Photoshop" > make edits as needed > Export from Photoshop as JPG or PNG

Now as soon as I export the photo from Photoshop, it will immediately affect the photo in the Lightroom catalog. It removes the rating (1-5 stars) and removes ALL edit settings, but the +/- icon on the bottom right of the thumbnail remains as if there are changes made. I can go back on the photo, look at the edit history, select the most recent change and the photo will go back to the edited version that I moved into Photoshop with, but this shouldn't be happening in the first place. This also happens when I save the file from Photoshop (to my computer or the cloud).

I've checked export settings on both softwares and can't find anything.

Using MacBook Pro 2020 M1 MacOS Tahoe 26.1
Photoshop 27.1
Lightroom Classic 15.0.1

My testing today with LrC 15.1.1 indicates that this is fixed in Ps (beta) v27.4, but not in Ps v27.2

@Noel Orridge is there any update on this ?

Why is this talking this much of time to fix ?

I belive this has broken, some of our workflow.

I initially contacted support and I showed the agent the issue over a screen share. The agent kept on insisting me this is normal. I told him I am using this feature for years and it was never like it.

I would suggest some basic CX agent traning.

I noticed it after upgrading my Macbook M4 to Tahoe 26.2. I don't know if it's because of that or the LrC/Ps update.

I have LrC 15.1, Ps 27.2.0., MacBook Air 13 M4 Tahoe 26.2

I import photos into LrC, make basic edits, add star ratings, etc., then I select Edit in Photoshop -> Edit photo -> Export as -> all settings for that photo are deleted in LrC.

I tried deleting and reinstalling everything - it didn't help.

LrC 15.1, Ps 27.2.0.

’m experiencing a persistent and workflow-breaking issue between Lightroom Classic 2026 and Photoshop 2026.

:keycap_1: Disk error during Transform in Photoshop

When working on files sent from Lightroom to Photoshop (RAW → TIFF workflow):

  • After editing and exporting as (both JPG and PNG)

  • Photoshop frequently throws the error:

“Could not complete the Transform command because of a disk error.”

Lightroom resets all settings in the RAW file (although this doesn't happen when I first save the file as TIFF)

This happens during:

  • Transform / Free Transform

  • Scaling layers

  • Working on Smart Objects or even regular raster layers

The error occurs even when there is sufficient free disk space, and not necessarily during saving, but during Transform operations.

What works / what doesn’t

:white_heavy_check_mark: Lightroom settings are now stable:

  • RAW → TIFF → JPG does NOT reset Lightroom edits anymore

:cross_mark: Photoshop still fails with disk errors:

  • Scratch disk has plenty of free space

  • Scratch disk set correctly

  • Issue happens on internal SSD as well

Steps already tried

  • Reset Photoshop preferences

  • Re-assign Photoshop manually as external editor in Lightroom

  • Restart both apps (multiple times, different order)

  • Checked scratch disk configuration

  • Disabled GPU acceleration

  • Reduced history states and memory usage

  • Avoided Smart Objects

  • Worked only with TIFF (no Save for Web / Export As)

:exclamation_mark: None of the above permanently fixes the Transform disk error

This appears to be:

  • A Lightroom ↔ Photoshop integration issue after preference reset

At this point, the workflow is unreliable and not production-safe (I need to reset photoshop after each exporting for the scratch disk error to disappear).

This issue doesn't appear when using Photoshop 26.11, It only happens with Photoshop 27+ and hasn't been fixed so far... I also contacted a support worker with access to my PC and he sais it's a bug of the new ps version.

Although not the same, this issue has some similarities with a long standing bug with Merge to Panorama and Merge to HDR, where the merged DNG imported back into LrC doesn't have the Import Step in the History properly highlighted. Below is an example Merge to Panorama. Initially, I selected the three photos and used Auto Sync to set the same Edit settings to all photos and applied the same Pick, Color Label and Rating to all of the them. In the Merge Panorama dialog, I didn't enable any settings; no Auto Settings, no Fill to Edges, no Stacking and no Auto Crop.

Screenshot 2025-12-24 115048.png

Note that the resulting merged DNG doesn't have the Import step in the History highlighted (background should be bright). The Edit settings are applied from the RAW source files, the AI Edit Status is highlighted, with the Adaptive Color profile needing an update; this is visible in the sky right of the photo's centre. Also note there is no Crop and the DNG gets the Red Color Label and 2-Star Rating, but doesn't get the Pick flag from the source files.

If the AI Edit Status is updated, I get this:

drtonyb_0-1766549122920.png

The Edits from the source files remain, the Update AI Settings step added to History is highlighted and the merged photo looks as it should, still with no Crop.

If instead, I first click the Import step in History, it highlights, all the Edits get reset, the AI Edit Status goes off (no Adaptive Profile now) AND the photo is Auto Cropped!

The same problem happens with Merge to HDR, except there isn't the Auto Crop problem.

It is caused by a bug where the catalog is not correctly updated (corrupted) when the merged DNG is Imported back into LrC and although having been reported multiple times over at least two years, the issue has never been fixed or even acknowledged.

@Jim Wilde,  @Noel Orridge and @Kris5EE0

Thanks Jim, I can now replicate using your steps with one proviso: if I use a Virtual Copy rather than the Original, then metadata and edits remain in LrC after saving with Export As... in Ps.
