P: (Win) Consumes RAM during import and fails to release afterwards

I notice that LR eats all memory when you start importing images.

When opened, it takes about 1.5-3GB ram. Then import 100 images, and RAM shoots up to +17GB

Iv been doing some tests with smaller raw files, same thing, always goes up to 17GB ram usage. The folder i imported as test contains only 5GB of raws, and LR uses more then twice that amount to import those images? When you delete the images, 17GB ram is still in use. Then tested less images, like 30, and memory still goes up, but less, around 5GB ram extra, for images that on disk only take around 1GB. Importing more images, like +300 will not make memory to increase more then 17GB.

Solution? Import images, restart LR to clear memory, edit... and ram usage will stay "normal" around 6GB during edit after some testing. Thats 10GB less then just doing an import. Whats up with that?

Im on 13.5 btw

Do you know if anyone is looking into this?

Have a look at this:

Lightroom open:

Camera Raw virtual memory: 707MB / 15908MB (4%)
Camera Raw real memory: 645MB / 31817MB (2%)

Lightroom after Import:

Camera Raw virtual memory: 10914MB / 15908MB (68%)
Camera Raw real memory: -77440MB / 31817MB (-243%)

Real memory is negative?

can anyone else test this?

Its really awefull to work like that and close and restart LR after each import

I've made multiple imports of 75-100 images in the past few days and have not observed the high-ram usage.

I would recommend a clean reinstall (since 13.5.1 was released this morning)

Clean Lightroom Install Procedure

Close Lightroom

Restart the computer

Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom

Restart the computer

Install Lightroom via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.

Restart the computer

Launch Lightroom

Wait 5 minutes

I already did clean installs before.

And 75-100 images it not enough. You need at least 300.

Yesterday imported 1300... Whole LR started to freeze all the time. Had to wait 10minutes for it to finish.

Then closed and reopened it . Ram was back normal and could edit

LIGHTROOM CLASSIC BLOQUEA EL PC, CONSUMIENDO EL 99% DE LA MEMORIA RAM.

Buenas tardes,

- Procesador AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 3.80 GHz

- He actualizado los controladores de mi tarjeta gráfica NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1660 SUPER, instalado NVIDIA STUDIO version 560.81 de fecha 2024/06/08.

- He borrado las preferencias.

This is an incrdible joke. I also saw memory shoot up. I open LR, its stable at 3.6GB and stays there. I import 200 images, 5GB sRAW total, and RAM shoots up to 17GB usage, thats 13GB, why? its more then twice the full raw image... dont tell me previews are bigger then the raws lol. I then restart LR after that and RAM is fine again and can edit the images and ram will sit around 6GB

I should add that I cannot reproduce the high memory use that your describe on any of my Mac computers. I tried the Mac internal card reader, an external card reader and import from disk after copying files to disk from the memory card.

(UPDATE: Please also read my comment below as a reply. I have identified when this extensive memory consumption occurs).

The problem has started to occur, or at least be noticeable, in the last few days. When working in the Development module on an image, Lightroom's use of motherboard memory surges to over 15 GB. I have 32 GB on my Windows 10 stationary PC. But this grab of over 15 GB causes the PC to not respond anymore. I have to wait until I get control of my mouse again and then shut down Lightroom and restart it.

This must be a bug. Today, just now, this happened when working on an image from a Nikon D810 with a dng file size of around 45 megabytes. I ran the Lightroom denoise, and was editing a few masks (subject and background selections with a few adds and subtracts using a brush mask) when the PC stopped responding. Looking in Task Manager, I saw that Lightroom's memory usage was over 15 GB. After restart of Lightroom and continuing to edit, I see that Lightroom memory consumption is currently only 3 GB.

Background information: My Lightroom Classic is updated to the newest version now, but this problem also occurred before I performed the last Lightroom Classic update. I installed a new graphic card a few days ago, going from a GTX 1660 Super to an RTX 3060. Graphic card driver is fully updated with the Studio driver version from Nvidia. This freezing of the PC caused by high Lightroom memory consumption seems to have started after putting in the new graphic card, but I do not see why that should be. Lightroom performance tab is telling me my system is capable of full GPU utilization (it was listed as limited only with the GTX 1660). I have the setting here on "auto".

This must be a bug. It is happening consistently and often, and I have to shut down Lightroom very often to clear out the memory usage. Today's episode shows clearly something is wrong, because it happened while working on the very first photo, it happened quite suddenly (while working with a few masks), and the memory usage is now down again after a Lightroom restart.

App version: Lightroom Classic version 13.0.2, Camera Raw version 16.0

OS version: Windows 10, fully updated, stationary PC with 32 GB RAM and a 12GB graphic card (RTX 3060)

To reproduce: I just work in the Develop module for a while. I am not sure if this is happening only or because of working with masks.

Expected result and actual result: Using over 8 or 9 GB RAM becomes too much for my PC and certainly for many others. Using 15 GB or more RAM creates a show-stopper situation. There should be no need to take a hold of so much RAM. Expected result therefore is better memory management in Lightroom Classic.

Hi! My C: drive is a 1TB SSD internal drive. Currently 474 GB is used, the rest is free. That means, it is about 50% utilized with plenty of space.
