Question

Sony A7V Lightroom Colour Clipping

Yesterday I took my first photos with my Sony Alpha 7 V, and before importing them into Lightroom, the images still looked normal—just as I had seen them in the camera. After the import, I noticed blue clipping. I then opened the image in Sony’s Image Edge software, and the RAW files do not show this clipping there. I’ve attached a screenshot—one from the Sony program and one from Lightroom using the beta profile. Could I have overlooked some setting, or could this actually be caused by the beta profile?

On the left side, the image is opened as a RAW file in Image Edge, and on the right side is the latest version of Lightroom using the beta profile. Both images are unedited.

Node: These are Not Highlight/Shadow clippings. Its the Harsh Blue thats overlaping and somehow not showing correctly.
Node2: The Raw File when looking at it in the Sony A7V is looking fine colourwise!

I can’t speak to the blues, but, I had a very similar issue with reds clipping leading to very soft looking reds. I think Adobe’s “Beta” colour profile here probably still needs work - and hopefully they will improve it very much before it’s actually final. In the meantime I shoot Raw to the one card and JPG to the other because my straight out of A7v JPG’s are doing much better than these raws. Heck I do hope ADOBE release these profiles soon!

Each RAW processor creates a rendering of the image that is different than other RAW processors. That’s normal. No, there is no setting that you have overlooked. It doesn’t mean that what you are seeing in Lightroom Classic is wrong. Clearly some editing is required, or adding a preset or using a camera profile in LrC is required, if that’s how you want to go, all of which is your choice.

Thanks for the post. You know what confuses me? Its the same Event i am doing for years now. Always harsh blue LED light. I was shooting with my A7III and never had this. Even under extrem light/colour settings.

Do you think its maybe not accurate because its beta support/profile for lightroom?

The initial rendering, and therefore the point at which tones clip, is first set by the default raw profile, and then the default Basic panel settings. If either has changed, the initial rendering can change. So maybe there is an issue with the Beta profile. Does the clipping go away if you try other raw profiles?

For photos in venues with strong non-white LED lighting, the initial clipping can be affected by the white balance compensation applied to the shot. Auto white balance might not be the best initial Temperature or Tint value. It should be possible to reduce clipping at the blue end in Lightroom Classic by shifting the Temperature value away from blue; I have seen this a lot when photographing music shows.

It’s normal for different companies’ raw processing engines to produce different default results, but maybe Adobe does need to adjust the Beta profile to be closer to what you see in the Imaging Edge software.

It is known that in some extreme LED situations Adobe software is unable to compensate as well as the camera maker’s software because of the limited range of its Temperature and Tint sliders. There was a recent thread here where someone was photographing under plant grow lights with an extreme magenta tint and Lightroom could not neutralize it even though the camera maker’s software could. Underwater photographers have reported similar issues.
