Files in Photoshop appear to save but don't show up.

This happens with the most recent version of Photoshop for an Intel Mac. When I try to save files as JPGs (I haven’t experimented with other formats) those files appear to save, but when I check the directory they were saved in, no files appear. This is on the startup disk. I just wasted 2 hours only to find my work evaporated. 

Now, I went back to the 27.3.0 release and this problem doesn’t exist on it.  I had tried eliminating other plug-ins and system extensions until I found rolling back the app fixed the issue. Now I don’t know if or when I could update the app to the current version.
