I can only get Generate Image to work with the latest Firefly Fill model

I can only get Generate Image to work with the latest Firefly Fill model. Not with any of the partner models (Win 11 desktop and laptop - the former running only the most current Ps production rel. 27.6 and the latter running only the latest Ps beta - not both on the same machine). Also, after trying to use reference image with a partner model it’s impossible to delete or remove the downloaded reference image. The trash can icon in the ref image dialog box doesn’t delete or eliminate the downloaded ref image. I’ve tried with multiple different base and reference images. And, I’ve tried by writing a prompt 1st (then the Generate button grays out) or making the selection and trying to establish object only and place in the selected area then choose the partner model. Neither approach works. It only works with the latest Firefly model - no partner models and I prefer working with Gemini and having the flexibility to use prompts.

Hi @Fotomaker01RA thank you for the excellent videos of what you are seeing.

First thing, please share your sysinfo: go to the top menu bar and in Help/System information, copy and paste all that info here.  Also, make sure you are on the latest Ps Beta which is Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.8.0 20260516.m.3543.  We should release an update on Thursday if you want to wait for that one, but at least you need to be on this most current Ps Beta because your video shows you on an earlier version.

    Thanks,

    Cory - Photoshop Product Manager

Hi Cory, Thanks.  I’m in the middle of a project on my laptop, but will grab the sysinfo as soon as I’m at a break point. The Ps Beta version (Win 11 - NVIDIA 4090 laptop processor) I’m on and that I made the vids with = x513.3540. I updated to that version so it was the most recent when we corresponded & I said I’d be making the videos for you.

Don’t know if you saw my follow-up note…  In the version I’m running right now (aka, the videos version) I’m able to get Reference Images working with all the Partner Models when accessing Generative Fill via  the Edit menu. From there, it works as it should and the Generate button in that dialog box doesn’t grey out. It’s usable and live even after a Ref Image is downloaded. But, the functionality does Not carry over into my Contextual Taskbar (where I believe it should). As you saw in the vids, as soon as a Ref Image is downloaded when using the Contextual Taskbar, the only model that works with Ref Images is the Adobe Firefly Fill/Expand. I’m no coder, but it seems as if some code linkage to the functionality that works from the Edit menu is missing & prevents Ref Images from being used with Partner Models via the Contextual Taskbar.

Thx for the update! Much appreciated. Best regards.

I think I missed that the issue is with the CTB alone, not the overall use.  That makes me want to say it could be a corrupt preference.  To fix that, or make sure it is NOT the cause, please:

    1. Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ Photoshop Beta Settings (Mac Ventura)
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings (Mac)

    C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Beta)\Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Settings

Launch BETA Photoshop While Pressing The Keyboard Shortcut
With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.

Hi Cory, I sent you two .mp4 videos showing what happens when trying to use Reference Images with partner models (vs with Firefly Fill/Expand) yesterday via WeTransfer. They only hold files temporarily. I just received an email saying the content will expire in another day & hasn’t been downloaded yet. I copied the link to you via your email also. Take care!

Hi Cory - I don’t know if you saw the 2 short demo videos I recorded/sent (see above) several days ago to show you what happens when I try to use Ref Images and partner models (via the Contextual Taskbar). It doesn’t work (at least not on my Win 11 system). As I demo’d in the video, the “Generate” button greys out and is unusable.

Today (5/16), I just tried something else to experiment. Working with the same base image & ref image, instead of trying to make my desired ref image-based change in the Contextual Taskbar, I used Edit > Generative Fill instead. Guess what, by doing that I was able to use partner models (I tried the latest Gemini Nano Banana) and it worked as it was supposed to!

It seems there may be some mis-connection in the Contextual Taskbar code if the feature is supported and works via the Edit > Gen Fill menu.

I hope that add’l. info helps the Ps devs to troubleshoot and correct for an upcoming release. Take care!

Hi @Fotomaker01RA thank you for the reply.

Reference Images and "Unable to Process" Errors -- Known Issues in Current Beta

Reference Image dialog becomes unresponsive after switching models

    • Known issue when switching between Firefly and partner models (Gemini, Flux)
    • Fix has shipped -- make sure you're on the latest Photoshop Beta build

    Can't delete reference images

    • Known issue -- deletions are staged until you click Generate
    • If you're also hitting the dialog issue above, you may get stuck in a dead-end state
    • Workaround: close and reopen the dialog to reset

    Erratic "unable to process" errors

    • Known issue -- two possible causes being investigated
    • Content safety check may be scanning the full canvas instead of just the selection, triggering false positives
    • AI features can drop out mid-session -- relaunching Photoshop usually restores them

If you're hitting any of these, reply with your build number (Help > System Info) and we'll follow up.

    Thanks,

I’m experiencing all 3 categories of known errors you’ve specified, Cory. On both of my Windows systems: = (1) Production Ps rel. 27.6.0 on my desktop PC (NVIDA 5090 Studio driver) and, (2) Ps beta rel. 27.7.0  2026429.M.3521 w/CC Desktop up-to-date on my laptop (NVIDIA 4090 Studio driver). I‘ve purposely kept the production release segregated from the beta releases & on two different machines so no cross impacts.

I’m experiencing the same errors with both my Ps production and Ps beta Windows implementations.

Ditto, my inability to use Partner generative models (Gemini, Flux, etc.) with the Reference Images functionality is the same on both my Win computers. On both systems, the only model that works to process and apply Ref Images is Firefly Fill/Expand. I just tried again a moment ago to verify. Bhvr is still the same = No active “Generate” button when I try to use Ref Image with partner gen fill models. On my systems, it’s not enough to close the downloaded Ref Image dialog box to clear the image. I either have to run Firefly Fill/Expand (to your point, by clicking the Generate button) or I must completely shut down Ps then restart it - b/c the Generate button is inactive and greyed out when trying to use partner models with a downloaded Ref Image.

If it would help, I could create an OBS video for you/team to see if it’s the ‘nut on the handle’ (aka, me) or at least to see what I see if it helps diagnose why it’s doing what it is. I tried to follow the exact steps Terry White just demo’d on YT in past days (and then tried variations on that theme too). Back when, there was an issue with the way Ps “Properties” were set up that impacted use of the Remove Tool. Once the Properties settings were adjusted, Remove Tool worked. I don’t know if this could be impacted in a similar way - I’m only tech enough to observe, report and be dangerous - not to troubleshoot/fix.

Just out of curiosity - you mentioned “default” models in your one reply. What is considered the “default” model? I generally have consistent success using Gemini for prompted gen fills (so I mostly leave my models set to it - it’s accurate even moreso than Flux). For content aware fills, the Firefly models (including the latest Fill/Expand) have worked effectively (but - no offense - are useless for prompts; they don’t understand common language prompts and never accurately produce needed content - at least not for me).

    Thx again for the follow-up!

    @Fotomaker01RA do you mean this?

    • Gen Fill / Gen Expand -- use the default Firefly Fill & Expand model

This means that if you open an image and select to expand the size, ie Gen Expand, it will use the default model which is Firefly Fill and Expand model.  You can actually choose this model if you make a selection to say fill with Gen Fill.

If you could share a video of what you are seeing that can always help to see what the steps are to try to reproduce the issue.

You can also share your sysinfo… go to the top menu Help/System information and copy and paste that here.

Have you updated to the latest Ps Beta, are you still seeing this issue?

    Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.8.0 20260510.m.3537 94bf687  arm64 (beta, PublicBeta)

    Hi @Fotomaker01RA ,

A few things worth knowing about Firefly model behavior in recent builds:

Firefly Image 3 no longer appears in Gen Fill / Gen Expand This is intentional. Starting in 27.6, Firefly Image 3 was retired from Gen Fill and Gen Expand and replaced by the newer Firefly Fill & Expand model. This is a planned transition, not a bug.

"Something went wrong" error in Generate Image Selecting certain Firefly models in Generate Image can trigger a generic error message. The team is actively investigating. In the meantime, switching to Firefly Image 5 (Preview) from the model picker should get you unblocked.

Model picker gets stuck after relaunch If you were using a non-default model before quitting Photoshop, the model picker can end up in a bad state on relaunch. If this happens, quit and relaunch Photoshop, then run a fresh generation before switching models.

    Quick reference:

    • Gen Fill / Gen Expand -- use the default Firefly Fill & Expand model
    • Generate Image errors -- try switching to Firefly Image 5 (Preview)
    • Stuck model picker -- relaunch Photoshop and generate once before changing models

Thanks for your patience while the team works through these. Please reply below if you're seeing anything different or unexpected.

Hi Cory! Thx for your note. I'm not having issues with the Firefly Fill/Expand model. Including while using Reference Images.

But, Ref Images is not working at all with any of the Partner Models (on either of my Win computers running different sole versions of Ps each - latest production rel on desktop, latest beta on laptop. It doesn't work after a close/restart of Ps either.

The other repeatable issue re: Ref Images - After Ref Images doesn't work with Partner Models it's impossible to delete the downloaded reference image. I click on the trash can icon in the Ref Images pop up dialog box and the ref image isn't removed and won't go away. My only recourse is to shut down Ps to clear that ref image download cache.

Besides those issues with Ref Images not working at all with partner models (Gemini & Flux both), Ps Gen Fill has been behaving erratically by generating error msgs - unable to process a prompt on images with nothing unusual or prohibited. That bhvr is new & started immediately following my 27.6 update in the past wk. That error (unlike the Ref Images situation) does seem to clear after a Ps restart. Trouble is, it requires me to save a lot of info dense PSDs because I'm working with multi layers & don't want to lose my work to do that 'reset'. If there's anything else I can test out to help y'all troubleshoot, pls let me know. We figured out one fix for a general Remove Tool issue in the past couple yrs working with a wonderful expediter. Thx again!
