P: Canvas Size relative Width/Height not recorded in Actions (values saved as blank)

In Adobe Photoshop, the updated Canvas Size dialog fails to record relative dimensions when recording an Action. This works correctly in 27.3.1 (Release), but is broken in 27.4.0 (Beta).

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open any document.

  2. Create a new Action (in the Actions panel).

  3. Click Record.

  4. Go to Image → Canvas Size…

  5. Change the units to millimeters (mm).

  6. Switch the size mode from Absolute to Relative.

  7. Enter values:

    • Width: X mm

    • Height: Z mm

  8. Click OK to apply.

  9. Stop recording.

Expected result

The Action records a Canvas Size step with parameters:

  • With Relative

  • Width: X mm

  • Height: Z mm

  • Horizontal: Center

  • Vertical: Center

  • Extension Color: Background

Actual result (27.4.0 Beta)

The Action records a Canvas Size step with:

  • With Relative

  • Width: (blank)

  • Height: (blank)

  • Horizontal: Center

  • Vertical: Center

The Width and Height fields exist in the recorded step, but their values are not saved (empty).

open an image in photoshop 27.4

    start to record an action

alt+crtl+I / change canvas size → set to for example 1000x1000

    stop recording the action

in the actions window, the step of changing the canvas size is logged in the recorded action, however the values are not saved.

    In 27.4, it reads:
    Canvas Size
    width:
    height:
    horizontal: centered
    vertical: centered

it should read (and does in Version 27.3):

    Canvas Size
    width: 1000 pixel
    height: 1000 pixel
    horizontal: centered
    vertical: centered

Specific wording might differ since my UI is in german.

I’ll attach a screenshot, with the bug version from 27.4 and below the correct one from 27.3.

OS is windows 11 pro, Version 10.0.22631 Build 22631.

@Champion Lee  As @Jeff Arola wrote this is a known issue and give you a appropriate workaround.

Adobe is aware of the issue and for now, until Adobe issues a fix, going to Photoshop 2026>Settings>Technology Previews, unchecking Enable Modern User Interface and restarting Photoshop should allow the Canvas Size actions to record properly.

I just discovered I had the same issue this morning. Your suggested work around was perfect. Thank you!!

Software Version: Photoshop 27.4.0 (Latest Update)

    Operation System:  macOS Sequoia 15.7.2

Problem Description: I am a user who relies heavily on the "Actions" feature for high-volume batch image processing. In the latest version of Photoshop, there is a critical bug where the "Canvas Size" command fails to record its parameters within an Action, while "Image Size" works as expected. This issue did not exist in previous versions.

    Steps to Reproduce:

    1. Open any image in Photoshop.

    2. Open the Actions panel and create a "New Action."

    3. Click the Record button.

    4. Go to Image > Image Size and modify the dimensions. (Recorded correctly).

    5. Go to Image > Canvas Size and modify the width/height or anchor point.

    6. Stop the recording.

Expected Result: The Action should display the "Canvas Size" step with the specific parameters (e.g., "Width: 2000 px, Height: 2000 px, Anchor: Center") recorded underneath it.

Actual Result: The "Canvas Size" step is either recorded as a generic command without specific parameters, or the parameters are ignored when the Action is played back. This makes the Action unusable for repetitive or batch tasks as it doesn't apply the intended canvas adjustments.

Additional Notes: This appears to be a regression. My workflow involves processing thousands of images, and this bug has created a significant bottleneck. Resetting preferences does not resolve the issue.

See if going to Photoshop Beta>Settings>Technology Previews, unchecking Enable Modern User Interface and restarting Photoshop makes any difference when recording the Canvas Size action.

I encounter the same issue too. Recently I tried to create a new action and the canvas size value is not recorded in the action script. Please help to look into this issue.

Issue solved by disabling Modern User Interface under the Technology Preview section in Setting Preferences.

I’m not seeing this. I ran existing an action with Canvas Size yesterday and it worked fine. Modern User Interface on (with ugly Canvas Size dialog) on Tahoe 26.3.

The canvas size not actionable issue is annoying. The problem is when recording the action, as existing canvas size actions were not affected, nor were they editable.  Semaphoric is right,  disabling Enable Modern User Interface in the Technology Preview section of prefs, solves the issue.  I did not even need to restart.  The tech preview of this new canvas size is frankly ugly and it is Adobe breaking a tool that was already tried, true and nearly perfect in a failed attempt to create a nicer user interface. Bad move. I want to know why this Modern User Interface was turned on without my input.   Thanks Adobe developers, you cost me about 45 minutes of my time while in the midst of a tight deadline.

I don’t know if this will help, but in the Technology Preview section of the preferences, try disabling Enable Modern User Interface, restart Photoshop, and see if the issues persist.

    Thank you very much!
The issue disappears when disabling “Enable Modern User Interface” in Technology Preview and restarting Photoshop.
