P: Export As says "An unknown error occurred."

When I choose “Export as” from the file menu, or rightclick in the layers panel to export a layer, the window that pops up for exporting just says “An unknown error occurred” and I cannot select anything.

I just updated to beta 27.4.0, and this seems to be happening on every document. This also only seems to be happening if I have “Use Legacy Export As” Selected under preferences?

I need the legacy mode to be enabled considering Adobe made some weird changes to how their PNG8 exporting works at some point, I need the legacy version to preserve the alpha channel on those.
It still does Quick Export to PNG correctly, even if I have both “Legacy mode” and “export as 8bit” on the Quick Export as PNG option, so it at least seems like file type that isn’t part of the issue. No idea what is though.

Extra note, I saw someone with a similar problem where theirs freezes when they switch to JPG, so it might be good to note that my dialog window is defaulting to JPG momentarily before the error pops up.

OS: Windows 10

Photoshop version: Beta 27.4.0

Now on the latest final release 27.4.0 20260218.r.15 6bd4063 and the beta 27.5.0 20260311.m.3453 95b1e61 the problem is still there. Safest is the final 27.3.1 release.

Can confirm it’s still happening in the newest Beta that I updated to today, “Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.5.0 20260314.m.3457 1720e4b x64 (beta, PublicBeta)”

I updated the main version of Photoshop before seeing this comment unfortunately, but clicking the option is defaulting to PNG… I’m too afraid to try changing it to JPG to see if it happens on the live version for me. This is a pretty huge problem for me if even the live version of the program is having this issue, legacy mode enabled Export As is the way I export images 90% of the time for website projects.

Looks like it has been corrected in this version now:

Have to disable Use legacy "Export As" in Export settings or it won't overwrite the file. It looks like its saving but its not. After disabling the use legacy.. it works. This only started happening in the latest beta build as of 2-14-2026

Someone reported this is happening in the newest public release of the program as well, it seems like the team didn’t investigate very hard a month ago?
