P: Generative Fill frequently causes Photoshop to crash

I've been using Photoshop Beta with Generative Fill for the past few weeks, and when it works it works well. However, one issue that I've had since day one is that it frequently causes my Photoshop to crash. Here's what typically happens:

  1. I select some area.
  2. I click "Generate" (doesn't matter if I put a promp in or not).
  3. The progress bar gets to around 80%.
  4. Dice are thrown, and quite often my Photoshop will just crash and close.

When it crashes, 90% of the time the Photoshop window just disappears and I have to re-open it. 10% of the time I get some generic message saying there is some 'fix' found, where none of the suggestions fix it. I've been using Photoshop for years without issue, and it's only this one new feature that suddenly causes it to crash all the time. Also, sometimes before the Photoshop crash my mouse cusor will lock up for a few seconds.

I've tried disabling GPU usage in Photoshop, forcing Photoshop's CPU affinity to just one CPU, and no matter what I do, it still crashes just the same. These images are typically in the 4-8 Megapixel range, and are usually just one layer, so there is nothing complex going on. Perhaps some fill scenarios crash more often than others, but it's hard to say.

I've searched a bit on this forum and online and I can't see anyone else talking about this issue, so maybe it's just me experiencing this many issues?

My PC specs are as follows:

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit

CPU: Ryzen 9 3950X

GPU: RTX 3060 Ti

RAM: Over 40GB free when crashes occur (Photoshop is set to use up to 36GB)

SSD: Over 1TB free when crashes occur

Photoshop Beta: Latest 24.7, I always check for updates before launching

My workflow now is to just save before doing any fills, but it's starting to get a bit tiring re-opening Photoshop all the time. If anyone has any other ideas for things to try, or logs to send, or builds to install, then please suggest it, I'll try anything to get rid of all these crashes. Thanks!

@Tessitori SpA the OP issue was solved, if you are having a similar issue, please start a new thread, show your workflow so the team can see what you see, share your system info and we will take a look at it as a new issue.

So, I have the same problem, and even if the app crashes, and I lose hours of work (no autorecover), THE GENERATIVE CREDITS ARE STILL DEDUCTED. How do I get my credits back???

@jonm86776712 you mention that you can get it to crash consistenly with your setup? Could you record a video of your workflow and the crash and post here? Are you on the latest Ps beta: Adobe Photoshop Version: 25.9.0 20240506.m.2611 c1372bf arm64?

Does the same crash happen with Ps release version or only with Ps beta?

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thanks,

I have a 2 monitor setup and I've found that by clicking on the other screen whilst a generative fill is in progress will crash Photoshop every time. Annoyingly when it comes to forcing Photoshop to quit, the Task Manager suddenly has no knowledge of Photoshop even being open. :(.

Thank you @CShubert

During/after the crashes with AI I do not get the popup from Adobe to report them. However, I do get it for other times, which I usually report.

@Harmonic_32 you mentioned that after prefs replacement you were able to work with Ps beta 24.7, then the next time you tried it crashed again?

I'm not seeing any submitted crash reports from you in our system. If you haven't done so already, please submit all Crash Reports along with your email address: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/submit-crash-reports.html That will help us diagnose the crash.

Well, I went to use the Beta again, since last using it on Jul 1, and it's crashing again 😞

The last two times I spoke with an Adobe tech, I was told that the main cause was the fact that my photos were on an external drive. I had moved my images, which seemed to work. But that was short lived also.

I also have frequent program crashes. WinDbg gives the following:

You're not the only one. I'm having the exact same issue. Last week I reached out by phone to Adobe. The tech took control of my PC and changed a lot of settings dealing with graphics card and user permissions. Nothing really seemed to help. So, it was decided I should go back to Beta v.26.  It was not perfect, but, it worked sometimes without crashing. I was told to update Beta again once v.28 came out.  Eventually, v.26 constantly crashed while using generative fill as well. So, today I decided to try v.27 again with no luck.  After reading the comments here, I decided to reset preferences, which was not done last week with the Adobe tech.  So, far, this has helped.
