P: Image darkens and then go back to the regular tone from continuously

After updates on Beta & regular Photoshop, when I am editing an image it will shift to a darker tone for a while & go back to original tone. It does this continually. How do I make it STOP!? It even does this when working with layers! I set image profile (the gray gamma) & made sure images is converted to same profile, however my images continue to go dark & back to original version.

Hey everybody,

We've looked into this one pretty thoroughly. What's happening is that when you're editing layers underneath adjustment layers (Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, etc.), the compositing engine occasionally drops the adjustment preview for a split second while it recalculates. That's the dark flash. The bigger your adjustment, the more obvious it is.

We know that's not what anyone wants to hear, because right now there's no fix we can ship for it because it's baked into how the real-time preview pipeline works.

Two things that can help in the meantime:

  • Turn off GPU acceleration (Preferences → Performance → uncheck "Use Graphics Processor"). This kills the flashing for most people, but you lose some GPU-dependent stuff like Object Selection overlays and Remove Tool highlights.
  • Full-screen mode (hit F). Some folks see it less or not at all in full-screen.
  • Neither of those is great, especially if you depend on GPU features all day. Keep the reports coming though. The more detail we have (GPU model, OS, what you were doing when it happened), the more it helps us make the case to improve this down the road.

Thanks,

Cory - Photoshop Product Manager

8 know the flash you mean, that isn't the same as the image darkening significantly.  The flash you are talking about is very different, it's a disabling of adjustment layers and is easy to spot.  The darkening which is spoken about largely here, happens for example if you open for example a jpeg, with no layers present.  It doesn't happen when HDR is enabled at OS level as I mentioned before.  It also doesn't happen in the latest beta, but it does still happen in the latest non beta

Same issue here. I guess it hasn’t been solved yet. I will disable the graphics processor for now. Hopefully it gets fixed ASAP.

yes i notice this too. if you press F to cycle views, and stop at the full screen view, the change in saturation and brightness stays, it seems linked to the actual canvas being visible.  Turning off the GPU features is not a fix at all, performance becomes so awful its really not good at all.  this version sadly is advertised at fixing previous colour/brightness shifts and inaccuracies, it seems to have made them worse!

Same issue here, @Kevin38012783ipfp solution works by turning off the graphics processor.

Same issue here, including Beta version of PS. Graphics card is Radeon RX580. Issue started with latest update to PS. PS 27.10.0 Turning off GPU processing hasn’t helped.

Reverted to version 27.9.1 and the problem seems to have disappeared. I thought at first it was my GPU, but issue has affected other cards as well. Going back to 27.9.1 has definitely solved it. Been stable on several images for lots of editing. Definitely an Adobe issue.

Turn off the graphics processor function in settings and restart the program. I did so and the issue stopped.

Yes, this worked. It did not at first, but after restarting my pc it did. Strange. Still interested to know what the consequences are for turning off the graphics processor. Maybe I will find out soon. 🤔
