P: Photoshop Beta 27.9.0 (Mac M1 Pro): GPU rendering causes blotchy artifacts in smooth gradients

Photoshop version: 27.9.0 Beta
Computer: MacBook Pro M1 Pro
Operating System: macOS Tahoe 26.5.1a

Issue:
Smooth gradients and dark vignette backgrounds display with blotchy, cloud-like artifacts when Use Graphics Processoris enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open an image with a smooth dark gradient or vignette.
  2. Enable Preferences → Performance → Use Graphics Processor.
  3. Observe blotchy artifacts in the gradient.
  4. Disable Use Graphics Processor.
  5. Reopen the image.

Result:
The artifacts disappear immediately when GPU acceleration is disabled.

Additional information:

  • The same JPEG and TIFF display correctly in Lightroom Classic.
  • GPU Compatibility Check reports the Apple M1 Pro as fully compatible.
  • Changing OpenCL and GPU Compositing individually does not resolve the issue.

    Hi ​@Jennifer266136724aqy the team will take a look into this. Stay tuned for a fix in a future update. Currently this is not a workaround other than the disabling of the GPU as you have noted.

    There have been similar reports about the non beta Photoshop 27.8 on the Mac side and the interim solution so far seems to be going to Photoshop>Settings>Technology Previews, unchecking Precise color management for HDR display, then restarting Photoshop.

     

    The above is instead of turning off Use Graphics Processor.

    Hi Cory...I prefer not to do resets if I can avoid it….I am attaching a slice from my photo with the use graphic processor check box on an off ...hopefully you can see the difference...I do close and relaunch photoshop when I change the graphic processor settings.  I am using Tahoe 26.5.1…

    Hi ​@Jennifer266136724aqy did you restart after switching from GPU on and off?  Could you share some screenshots of what you are seeing before and after?

     

    1. Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ Photoshop Beta Settings (Mac Ventura)
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings (Mac)


    C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Beta)\Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Settings


    Launch BETA Photoshop While Pressing The Keyboard Shortcut
    With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.

    2. It may help if we could see your Photoshop beta System Info. Launch Photoshop beta, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.
