when chosing a brush - this case a clone brush it freezes when changing the hardness from 100 to lower

 photoshop  freezes when  selecting  hardness or softness of  the brushes, and when i work in a different program and come back to photoshop to try again, it does work again but the brushes freeze when i try to change brush settings
