Windows .psjs association launches Photoshop but does not execute script; same PSJS works via File > Scripts > Browse

Photoshop version: 27.10.0
Platform: Windows 11

ISSUE

A .psjs script executes successfully when run from inside Photoshop using:

File > Scripts > Browse

However, the same type of .psjs script does not execute when launched externally through the Windows registered .psjs file association.

The external launch is accepted, but the PSJS payload does not run and its expected diagnostic receipt is not created.

EXPECTED RESULT

Launching a .psjs file through its registered Windows association should pass the script to Photoshop and execute it.

ACTUAL RESULT

Windows/ShellExecute accepts the .psjs launch, but Photoshop does not execute the script.

TESTS PERFORMED

1. External Windows .psjs launch

Registered file type:
Photoshop.PSJSFileType.200

Registered command:
"Photoshop.exe" "%1"

Photoshop was running and responsive.

The external launch was accepted, but the diagnostic script did not execute and no receipt was created.

2. Internal Photoshop execution

I then ran the diagnostic .psjs from:

File > Scripts > Browse

This worked successfully.

Photoshop created the diagnostic receipt at approximately 14:25:24 on 24 September 2026.

The receipt confirmed:

require('photoshop').app.documents.length = 0

No document operations were performed and Photoshop remained responsive.

The script also attempted require('photoshop').app.version, which returned undefined. This did not prevent execution of the script.

3. COM control test

As an additional control, Photoshop automation through COM also worked successfully.

It returned:

Photoshop version: 27.10.0
Documents.Count: 0

CONCLUSION

The evidence appears to isolate the problem to the external Windows .psjs association / handoff path.

Photoshop itself works.
Internal PSJS/UXP execution works.
COM automation works.
Only external .psjs association execution is failing.

No Photoshop rollback has been performed.

IMPACT

This prevents unattended/external launching of PSJS automation even though the same PSJS scripts can execute successfully when launched manually from inside Photoshop.

I have attached:

1. A recording showing the external .psjs handoff failure.
2. A recording showing successful File > Scripts > Browse execution.
3. The JSON receipt created by the successful internal PSJS test.

QUESTION

Is external execution of .psjs files through Photoshop.PSJSFileType.200 expected to work in Photoshop 27.10.0?

If so, is there a known regression or additional requirement affecting the Windows association / handoff path?
