Question

CR3 files freeze Photoshop when opening via double-click (Camera Raw) after latest update

After installing the latest update for Adobe Photoshop, I’m having consistent issues opening CR3 files.

When I double-click a CR3 file (which should open in Camera Raw), Photoshop either:

  • Does nothing at all, or
  • Shows an error saying it can’t open the file type, or
  • Starts to open, then completely freezes

When it freezes, Photoshop becomes unresponsive and cannot be closed normally. I have to force quit it using Activity Monitor.

Workaround (temporary):
If I open Photoshop first and then go to File → Open, the CR3 file will open correctly. However, this is much slower and disrupts my workflow.

Expected behaviour:
Double-clicking a CR3 file should reliably open it in Camera Raw without freezing or errors.

System Info:

  • Camera: Canon EOS R5 Mark II
  • File type: CR3 (RAW)
  • OS: macOS (add your exact version here)
  • Photoshop version: (Help → About Photoshop)
  • Camera Raw version: (Photoshop → About Plugins → Camera Raw)

Additional notes:
This issue started immediately after the most recent update. Prior to this, CR3 files were opening normally via double-click.

@Nikki24079644p6x2 have you try resetting the ACR preferences

Hi Nikki.  Have tried really basic things like restarting your Mac?   I am having no issues opening R7 RAW files on an M2 MBP.   It sounds like something that resetting Preferences might fix, and that would be my first attempt a solution.

You could also try deleting the Camera RAW cache

If still doesn’t fix it, try disabling GPU acceleration, although if things work after that, I am not sure where you’d go from there.

I have cleared the cache in camera raw & photoshop. Reset preferences. Restarted the Mac. The first CR3 file will open, then after that nothing happens when I click on CR3 files. I have to open via open file in photoshop. Everything was working perfectly fine until yesterdays update, then nothing but issues. Having to force quit photoshop is also being a complete pain. I would like to remove the update and go back to the previous version I think. Actually just about everything was updated yesterday, creative suite, photoshop, camera raw AI and LRC I think. But I have only used photoshop and camera raw since.

You can install the previous version without removing the current (problematic) version, so it’s a no brainer to give it a try.  I am sure you know how to do this:

OK, but I am not so sure that things will be back how they were with the previous version.  Did you try with GPU acceleration disabled?

    Fingers crossed. Good luck!
