InDesign drops image Description metadata when Photoshop PNG export excludes camera info
Product: Adobe Photoshop v27.5.0
Impact observed in Adobe InDesign 2026
When exporting a PNG from Photoshop using Save for Web with metadata set to “All Except Camera Info,” InDesign only recognizes the image Alt Text. The Description metadata is dropped and does not appear in InDesign’s Object Export Options.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open an image in Photoshop v27.5.0
- Navigate to File > File Info > IPTC
- Enter text into both:
- Alt Text
- Description
- Export the image via File > Export > Save for Web with:
- Preset: PNG‑24
- Metadata: All Except Camera Info
- Place the exported PNG into Adobe InDesign
- Select the image in InDesign and open Object Export Options
Actual Result:
- Alt text appears in InDesign
- IPTC Description metadata is missing
Expected result:
- Alt text appears
- IPTC Description appears
- Camera metadata excluded
IPTC Description metadata should not be removed when camera metadata is excluded
Test:
When the same image is re-exported from Photoshop with Metadata set to “All,” both Alt Text and Description appear correctly in InDesign, but include unwanted camera metadata.
This issue prevents a compliant accessibility workflow. Alt Text and Description serve different accessibility purposes, and current behavior forces users to choose between:
- Retaining accessibility metadata or
- Excluding unwanted camera metadata
Both should be possible simultaneously.
