P: PS 27.4 Setting the default in Preferences > Units to "inches" is ignored by Canvas Size

Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.4.0 2
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit

When I go to Image → Canvas Size, the default is always pixels. I want it to be inches.

Note: I have checked in preferences, units and measures, and the default is inches. Also when I go to image → Image size, the default is in fact inches, which is what I expect.

Is the default unit for image → canvas size now different? Is there a different place to set it?

thanks

    Hey, @bellevue scott & @sherrifricker! Thanks for bringing this up.

    I can reproduce this as described. I've logged this for the team to review. Please use @Jeff Arola’s instructions to temporarily disable the new UI panel.

    This worked for me on Windows 11, but I am surprised that this bug made it through the development team’s quality control. Please fix it ASAP.

    In Photoshop go to Photoshop 2026>Settings>Preferences>Technology Previews, uncheck Enable Modern User Interface, restart Photoshop and see if that corrects the issue with Canvas Size.

    So this feats still unusable, good thing there is a way to turn it off.

    In Photoshop go to Edit>Preferences>Technology Previews, uncheck Enable Modern User Interface, restart Photoshop and see if that corrects the issue with Canvas Size.

    @sherrifricker

    I am away from my office right now, but you should be able to type in any unit of measurement. For instance, if the measurements are in pixels type 8” or 8mm or 8p0, for instance, and Photoshop will accept the input and display the number in pixels. If you only type 8 without the rest, it will default to the current measurement system, i.e., 8 pixels.

    I think there is something in Preferences to always display inches. If no one else chimes in, I’ll look when I’m back in my office and let you know.

    Photoshop works in pixels, so my personal preference is to keep it in pixels.

    Hi Jane. Thanks for your reply. I have set my preference in Units & Rulers to inches but every time I change the canvas size, I have to change the units from pixels to inches. With my old set up, the canvas size units stayed at inches. I thought I had copied over all the settings. Not sure if this is due to the updated OS or the updated version of Photoshop. Any help you can provide would be great.

    Thanks!

    Hello, We have a new iMac with Apple M4 chip with macOS Tahoe 26.3. I have Photoshop 2026 27.4.0 Release. In Photoshop > Settings > Units & Rulers the units is set to inches and the ruler displays in inches, however when I go to Canvas size, it is always in Pixels and I have to change this for both width and height everytime I need ot resize an image. Since I work in photography, being able to set the size in inches is required and this adds extra steps. On my previous iMac with Sequoia and Photoshop 2025, I had the same settings and the Canvas size always defaulted to inches. How can I get this saved so canvas size is always in inches. Thanks in advance!
