Unable to use gradation on a mask

Its been for a couple of years at least., that i cant use gradient on the mask in additive fashion by gradually revealing or hiding the layer even when using classical gradient. 

Is there a dix so far? Amy pinned threads that we users can request to bring this simple option that has been for years back?
