Caption Editor closes after each character

24.1.0 Beta (build 29). Windows 10.

Once I've created captions from a transcript, if I want to edit any text in a particular caption segment, I double-click to activate the editor, and then it closes the editor after each character (but not spaces, I believe). I have to double-click it after each letter to re-activate the editor. The editor should remain open until I tap the escape key to close it.
