Don't like autoselect clip as a default.

With default settings, if I have a clip on the timeline and place the time indicator over it, the clip is automatically selected.

Problem occurs when you're trying to add timeline markers.  While the indicator plays over the selected clip, the "M" key adds markers to the CLIP, not the timeline.

So it appears the trick to this is to

1. Position the time indicator where you want it (highlighting the clip beneath it)

2. Click in a blank area of the timeline to deselect the clip

3. Play and insert markers

I think there's a setting to turn off this default setting, but I don't know where it is. It should be off IMO.

Thanks for that. I think that should be disabled by default.

You can set this behavior in menu>Sequence > Selection follows playhead
